I just heard on the local TV station that Ft. Rucker would be losing some jobs with sequestration but was SHOCKED when it was said that Huntsville would be losing 15,000 jobs at Redstone. Is that true? That seems like a high number and if so, what impact will it have on the economy/housing there? Been surprised that there has been no thread started on the losses and hopefully it is not accurate!

I think Mawoods misread. More likely there will be at least 15,00 who will be affected by the sequestration that live in the Madison County area. There will be pay periods in which they will earn 20% less as they will be off on one Friday of said pay period. I have heard that there are contractors who are letting people go but that's nowhere near 15,000.

Total employment for Redstone Arsenal is 30,000 (NASA MSFC is another 6,000)..... umm, yeah... 1/2 the jobs aren't going to disappear overnight.

Once again stupid inaccurate reporting and then repeated. There will be approx 15,000 jobs in Huntsville who
will be sequestered, They will not be losing their jobs. They will be forced to give a day of work(Friday) until Sept 30 starting in July.
Oh an asteroid passed the earth Friday, but listening to some news reports the end was near.
Journalism is a dead profession, replaced with drama and fake tv.

If anything Redstone will be gaining jobs. They have like 3 or more new buildings being built (1 @ MDA) plus they are renovating a bunch more buildings by gate 10.

This is correct. However, the building renovations inside gate 10 are not new jobs. Redstone is taking advantage of empty space on the Arsenal to move government employees out of leased space outside the Arsenal. The renovations were very expensive but it will save them $$$ long term.

For what it is worth, I heard the reporting on the local affiliates in Dothan, AL. Good to know that it isn't true.
I agree that choice of words is many times overlooked in reporting. Job loss is quite different from furloughs.

I wondered why it was so quiet on here!
