Of course punching a teacher is a big deal. What is happening at Grissom that kids are now thinking that punching a teacher is NOT a big deal? That's a pretty steep decline from when I was there.

Yes, back in the '90s, it was a very good school. I remember drugs (and the kids with drugs getting arrested and expelled), but I don't remember any violence. Teachers were very highly respected, many of them were highly educated as well.

It seems to be declining. That's disheartening.

pkbab, its not just Grissom, but a lot of schools are this way now.

My mom retired about 8 years ago, and it wasn't because she really wanted to, she was just sick of the state of the schools. Teachers had NO support from administration, and administration was too scared to really punish a lot of these kids due to backlash and lawsuit threats from parents. I don't know if this is the same issues Grissom could be facing, but its happening all over. Some of the public schools are getting really bad.

Several teachers were hit by students in her school, including a pregnant teacher that was pushed to the ground by a student. The principal gave him IN SCHOOL suspension which really isn't much. A girl was drug into a bathroom and raped by three boys...affluent boys...whose parents threatened the school system with suit if they did anything since the only proof they had was the video the SRO officer had of the boys dragging her in the bathroom and emerging about 10 minutes later...oh, and her physical exam which showed rape and other battering. The girl's parents removed her and put her in private school and my mom said the whole thing just sort of went away...

My mom was to the point where she was afraid of the students and her and many others felt they had NO support from administration OR the school board. The kids pick up on this and act as they wish. The teachers can only do so much in the classroom and the kids learn when the administration isn't going to back the teachers, they can do as they wish.

BTW, this was in what is considered an affluent Jefferson County MIDDLE school. At least Grissom expelled the student, that was the right thing to do.

When I was in high school in the 90's, during assemblies our principal would call the girls down to the stage that were in violation of the dress code and would make them get down on their knees and measure the length of their shorts. In front of the entire school. Can you imagine what would happen to an administrator today if that happened? Teachers and administrators don't have the authority to discipline or address those issues like they used to.

its not the school that is declining,,its that parenting has declined or is non existent.
The opportunities that schools offer now is unprecedented in history.
But back in the 60's and 70's there was violence that made this little dust up at Grissom
seem like a tea party

Tried to rep you AU.. that's my thought.. where the heck are the parents. This is what happens with a generation that has had so much simply handed to them and everyone's a winner.

I think that is true. The electives offered now have come along way since home ec, shop French and Spanish. The students today have so many choices to prepare them for college or the work force: medical, biomedical, engineering, agriculture, education, business, consumer affairs, cooking classes in industrial kitchens, off campus instruction.

Don't believe me? Take a look at this course catalog:

The tough choice students have today is what to take there are so many selections!
