Speaking of hotels this is not in Huntsville but noteworthy for the state.

Auburn’s The Laurel Hotel & Spa, which opened in September 2022, has been awarded a Five Diamond designation by AAA Travels -- one of only 89 hotels in the United States to receive AAA’s highest rating.

The Laurel is also the first hotel in Alabama to earn Five Diamond status from AAA Travels.

oh yeah, its crazy the amount of towers being constructed or planned in Nashville. There is some spillover to Huntsville in the form of some investors and developers taking a look at us. Might not amount to anything but you never know.

Construction expected to begin soon on the McKee Road Intermediate School for 4th 5th and 6th graders(Madison County School) in the Toney/Harvest area. Should be ready fall 2026. Interesting feature at this site will be a fairly large wet water and storm retention pond in front of the school. Similar to what you see now in a lot of new housing developments.

There is tons of land nearby that isn’t in a flood plain. There was a large 50 acres just to the east of the soon-to-be school and realtor said it was flat out a flood zone, not a maybe.

That land was purchased in 2008 for higher than market value for farm land. No idea who the lucky owner was in 2008 but that is/was the school district land management plan. At a recent public meeting, the superintendent said no new property taxes would be incurred as a result of this school (despite property taxes actually going up this year).

One other item that was mentioned was the three turn lanes being constructed on hwy 53 at Harvest rd, McKee and Old Railroad. Harvest rd needed a turn lane about ten years ago but better late than never. That “intersection” (stoplight) during rush hour is horrible.

I was browsing Combined Statistical Areas, and I happened to see Huntsville-Decatur’s listed as a population of 879,315. Has the CSA been redefined for Huntsville-Decatur? I ca not verify this information anywhere else but on Wikipedia (many grains of salt…)

According to the list, the Huntsville- Decatur CSA would include Madison, Limestone, Morgan, Lawrence, Morgan, and DeKalb counties in Alabama, and Lincoln county in Tennessee.

It already has been “declared” for a while. Stats say 2007

Note the legend on that map link, by census bureau, is incorrect with “Texas” when the map is Alabama. QC was difficult in 2007.

It's been in and out. Prior to March 2018, the CSA included Madison, Morgan, Limestone, Marshall, DeKalb, and Lawrence.

In 2018 Dekalb and I think Marshall were dropped.

Then in the April 2023 delineation the original 6 were added, along with Lincoln, TN. Adding the populations gives about 880,000.

It seems the Census Bureau is a bit more casual with CSA definitions. I wonder when we will see a redefinition of the Huntsville MSA?
