Under the AL Food Cottage Law (FCL) I'm not allowed to give samples . . . can you believe that?!

I mean in past farmer's markets I've done in AZ, we're allowed to do that and it's a great selling tool.

We're moving in by May to our "barniminium" and after doing some research, we're going to put in a commercial kitchen in what used to be an RV bay because according to the AL Food Cottage law (FCL), I'm not allowed to do more than 20k a year ($1667 a month) in a home kitchen. Also in order to be a good neighbor, I want to do online orders and mail orders so as to not have cars coming in and out of my property. But to do this, I have to now become a professional bakery and put in a commercial kitchen, get food business insurance, a business license (which was not required under the food cottage law), and have the kitchen officially inspected (again under the food cottage law is not required for a home baking business).

Wish us luck!!
Stating the obvious here but Ardmore is a city in both states. So the “barnimium” is on the Alabama side? The lotteries are only on the north side of hwy 53 for a reason.... one side of Ardmore has income taxes, the other side....

We live on the AL side. My hubby had a great suggestion: instead of samplers (which AL food cottage law won't allow) he suggested selling "Cookie Bites" and selling them for a nickel (limit of 2 bags). That way buyers have a sample of the cookies I'm selling without me breaking the law.

There's a bakery up in Bryson (about 6 miles north of Ardmore) that just opened, the Wise Ant. It's across Old Elkton Pike from Corner Pit BBQ. I don't see them staying in business, unfortunately.

K-May Donuts used to be on Main Street Ardmore TN, they closed several years ago.

I'm not aware of any other bakeries or donut shops near Ardmore until you get to the Hwy 53 Publix.

When I'm open for business, I'll let everyone know.

Wish us luck!!

Did you ever open your bakery?
