Hi all,

Was wondering if anyone has recommendation for contractor to do repairs and maintenance, and for HVAC and roof services, as well as plumbers? I'm in 35758. Thanks!

Default HVAC cost rip off in NJ

I don't know what state you live in but it might be best to use a service like Angies List not home improvements.

I am having a problem with that myself. I hired a Company and got this A-hole who I got suckered by.
He said if I pay $200.00 cash he wouldn't add tax and other charges for maintenance on my HVAC system for apartment size home with supposed added Freon. I didn't have that kind of cash at home so I charged an extra hundred for paying with a check.

I don't even know if this man is the owner or not. I checked in Linkden under the Company name but there isn't a picture of him, and the name and address of the owner is listed but it looks like it's his home address not a business address. So either this man is ripping off his employer and taking cash but not letting the employer know or he is the owner and ripping off the Government and the homeowner.

I want to report him but no one in the IRS answers, no surprise there, so is it better to just let it go or try to report this man. He wasn't wearing a badge. He was not the one of the two men I saw working on the other building with those residents and they had my name on their list. This guy with his handy helper didn't have any receipt written up ahead of time. I know I had to pay more for the freon but that much?? and all cash? they said on the phone it' would be $80.00 and no tax charged if paying in cash. But because he charged $200.00 seems to me he should have to report that income when I have to pay the tax not him. why does the customer have to pay the tax?

It’s assumed that the post, being in the Huntsville forum, is asking about Huntsville area contractors. For one stop shop, you can contact Neighborly, which is about ten sub-companies to do just that, one stop shop.

However, these days each area has its own set of problems. For roofing, if it’s small repair, is often two or three week backlog. Don’t know about the time to replace a roof. Don’t know for plumbing. For HVAC, if it’s a service call, AireServ is high quality.

He stated he was in 35758. That's Madison, Alabama.

That guy is a crook - definitely don't try to do business with him. He probably had no idea how to service an HVAC anyway.

My parents and I both individually have had to use some HVAC services in the past 2 yrs. Like you I got tired of getting ripped off. We did find one though that did some work for another family member and thus far have found them to be the most reasonable and fair in their pricing. They actually spent a long time at my dads trying to track down a dif sort of prob he was having and eventually found that it was simply a short somewhere. We were a bit afraid of what the charge might be after they had been searching for the cause for some time. It was much lower than we were expecting. Ralph Braswell at AC Controls 256.541.4055.

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend a plumber. I repaired my own toilet yesterday as the last plumber just plainly ripped me off. Never changed out the parts he charged me for. Live & learn, eh?
Right now, for repairs and maintenance, it's tough. They are all so busy that small jobs are being ignored. But generally you won't know you're being ignored until they simply don't show up for the appt. I'm trying my 8th one now for sodding my yard, etc. Can't get anyone to actually show up for an estimate.

Oh.. and if you aren't on Nextdoor dot com, check it out. That's one of the better places to find recommendations for your particular neighborhood/area.

Ditto Nextdoor as a great resource.

I have been happy with the following:

HVAC - Conditioned Air Solutions
Roof - Thompson Roofing & Construction
Plumbing - Bowers Plumbing

I will second Conditioned Air Solutions. I have used them both in business service and my home. Another is Garrison & Garrison.

Roof - I used Budget Roofing on 3 different houses. The first being mine and they did a good job, the 2nd and 3rd were families and they seemed to get worse the more business I sent them

Plumbing - Bowers, Dean and J-Henry

Thanks for the recommendations y'all! I tried Google and Angi and only 2 contractors responded out of the 10 probably that I requested a quote from. Does anyone here have experience with Chandler Wise and Scott Plumbing? Online reviews are great, though I'd rather not just rely on online reviews and ideally would love to have and build relationship with someone reliable who's done many projects for different family members.

Someone was also telling me how hard it was to get someone to come out to give an estimate, and I didn't want to believe it.

It's been that way forever around here; it's not just an issue because of the current boom. Chances are pretty good that you'll call a company, set up an appointment, and they never come. That's not true of the reputable ones of course, but it's true of many that advertise.
