Hello,

Does anyone have a list of the radiation fallout shelters around town in Huntsville, Alabama?

I saw a map somewhere but was wondering if there is something more solid on them with more information.

If I could get the address and details of each location it would be nice to have in the case of a disaster.

Which are the best? Which are the largest? Which offers more protection against radiation? Which offers more services? How do you get access to the facility in case of an emergency? How long can you use the facility? What are the conditions at each? ... What else should I know?

Second, which shelters are the best to avoid a tornado disaster? Do you have a list for these? How do you get access to the facility?

Thank you,

In the extremely unlikely event of a nuclear war, a fallout shelter will be utterly useless. None are stocked anymore, there are no toilet facilities, food, water or anything else. You will come back up and die shortly thereafter from radiation sickness or starvation. In nuclear war, the living will envy the dead.

I'm a Boomer and realize most Gen-Xers or Millennials have no clue what nuclear war would be like, here's a general idea (Mods, forgive me if this is not allowed on this Forum):

What Do Those Fallout Shelter Signs Actually Mean?

Quote:
Existing buildings were deemed suitable if they met three criteria: No. 1, Physical protection, which often meant they were fairly airtight, with thick concrete walls.

"They had to have a protection factor of at least 40," said Colby. "[That] meant you would receive 1/40th the radiation inside the building than you would outside, unprotected."

The second requirement was that there be space in the building at a suitable distance from likely fallout. This often meant the basements in buildings like schools, and the middle floors of taller buildings. The third criteria was sheer size.

Default More information on "sheer size"

Here is the complete quote on "sheer size."

Quote:
The third criteria was sheer size. "Room for at least 50 people with 10 square feet of space per person," said Colby.

Most if any, aren't stocked anymore as has already been mentioned. Most, are used for other purposes so not many people would fit in them. It would be total chaos if nuclear war broke out and if you went to one of the "fallout shelters" on the map, you would end up there with who knows how many other people trying to pack into this space that is not equipped and you would soon realize there is no food and there would only be water if people brought it with them. There are also nowhere near enough of them to hold the size of our current population. You would be more or less heading into a dire situation with people who are panic stricken and all rules of society would pretty much go out the window......not a good situation to be in. You would be better off going outside, watching the mushroom cloud and going out in a blaze of glory with a beer in your hand.

I suspect the Federal government always knew that most fallout shelters were worthless. If that is true then their real purpose was mostly psychological to make people think that the government was doing something about the perceived threat of nuclear war in the 1950s and 1960's.

A good shelter would have to isolate itself from the outside by filtering the air to keep radioactive particles out. Supplies of food and water would have to be replaced at a regular interval beforehand to keep them from going bad. Also note that someone might have to say in a shelter for many months at a minimum. Even when it was safe to come out there may not be much left to keep him alive. How do you plan for something when the chance of survival is near zero?

Fallout shelter? Why would you need a fallout shelter?
Maybe you mean a storm or tornado shelter.
That's more practical and more commonly found.
