Thanks for the replies. I have been really looking into these areas, especially Scottsboro. A couple of questions have come up: Do any of these towns feel like a "mountain town"/ or "Appalachian town"? And is Huntsville crime a major issue (see mixed results on this)?

And I forgot to add, is the area homestead-friendly? Are there food co-ops, farmers markets, etc?

Don't know about food co-ops or totally self-sufficient homesteading, but there are several farmers' markets across the area, open in late spring, summer, and well into fall.

There are some groups that at least call themselves food co-ops - basically a local group that markets their produce, they have boxes of specific veggies or fruits every month, several months per year that they would bring to specific locations. Some of the folks I worked with bought them. There are farmer's markets in Madison, Hsv, and Athens during spring/summer/fall.

What is a “food co-op”? There are farmer co-op’s in every county in both Alabam and Tennessee with Tennessee often having more than one in each county. The prices and selection vary widely and surely the county in Scottsboro has one, possibly within the city.

I just meant co-ops that are organized for purchasing and selling locally grown food. I think we're talking about the same thing.

I believe farmers' co-ops sell necessary for farming, like fertilizer and herbicides, as well as farm equipment.

Farmers' markets are closer to what you're calling food co-ops, I think. Items at farmers' markets aren't necessarily organic but are locally grown.

Rocket, you’re correct. Farmers markets in Alabama simply want sellers to affirm they grew their products in the county they live in or adjacent county. Huntsville doesn’t allow Tennessee produce at their farmers market.

In my post above I was thinking about a CSA (community supported agriculture).
