This makes me REALLY hope that homeschooling continues to work for us long term.

Is the rumor mentioned in the original post related to the Whitesburg incident? Or, is the Whitesburg incident completely unrelated (and therefore sort of confusing to be mentioned in a rumor thread)?

It's unrelated, the other 2 threads were referencing a school name (which obviously wasn't Whitesburg), and didn't want to start a new thread, so I posted the news here, but I didn't realize the impact. Sorry for the confusion.

I second that!! So sad when we need to fear sending our kids to school.

People in the nicer parts of Huntsville are actually nervous about sending their kids to school? There's probably a 69 times greater chance of getting injured (or worse) just driving to school than of becoming a victim of gun violence at school. I doubt anybody in the nicer parts of Huntsville places school violence in the top five reasons to home school.

It's not a matter of fear of death and dismemberment, Charles, it's a matter of the school environment. The high school I attended which is in a nice, suburban area (in Orange County, California) had the lockers ripped out the year after I graduated because of issues with weapons and drugs and "Aryan Brotherhood" flyers being distributed in lockers after hours. Visitors can no longer come to the campus without at least 24 hour advance arrangements, and I heard they were looking into metal detectors and random backpack searches.

When it starts going down that route, it's not exactly a feel-good learning environment. If the schools are in that position by the time my little ones get to high school, yes, it would be a factor in choosing to continue to learn in a non-oppressive environment.
