if I could put my 2 cents in without actually reading the article, it sounds like they are avoiding "tenuring" new teachers. Most place, AL included, award tenure after 3 years therefore making them practically "untouchable" and guarantees them employment.

Wow. Those comments following the link gave me a headache.

Now, folks...I prefer not to gamble any more than real life demands of me, but why is it Alabama does not have a beneficial lottery?
The Florida Lottery - Education - Dollars to Education
(I don't want to turn us in to Florida, but this is what I know, so cited it as my example.)

33458....every state surrounding Alabama has a lottery which funds education, among other things. Florida and Georgia have been the most successful. Both also have a very successful program for graduating high school seniors to attend state colleges. I am not 100% sure about Georgia's, but Florida's pays 75% of the student's tuition if the student graduates with a minimum GPA and SAT/ACT score.
While I am not a gambler, it is frustrating to see our residents drive over the state lines to purchase lottery tickets in these other states, when we could implement that here to help better our educational system...among MANY other things!

Georgia's is better: 100% of tuition + a book allowance for all students graduating with a B or higher average.

Lottery money in Georgia also pays for free 4 year old preschool.

Nevada had something like that too, called it the millennium scholarship, but they started running out of money after awhile. I think having scholarships like that is the best thing in the world. Especially with the rising cost of college. It is unbelievable that just one textbook can cost $250.

I thought that might be what it was....hmmm, maybe I need to get Georgia on my mind before the kiddo graduates! That's a pretty rocking deal!

But the main factor is lack of funds, correct? Is it the BOE's fault sales tax collections have declined or the state is cutting funds?
