"90L" or Potential Tropical Cyclone 7 (PTC7) has now become Tropical Storm Franklin.
5amEST: Winds 45mph(75km/h), moving WNW 13mph, pressure 1005mb. Could reach near Cat 1 Hurricane by tonight before reaching the Yucatan. Tropical Storm winds extend 140miles(220km) from storm center.
This storm will eventually head into the Bay of Campeche (SW corner of Gulf of Mexico) and make landfall into Mexico again sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday. Chance for short rapid intensification with super warm waters there but time will tell after making landfall first into the Yucatan which will hurt the storm some.
Watches/Warnings:
Hurricane Watch issued for Yucatan Peninsula from Chetumal to Punta Allen, Tropical Storm Warning Chetumal to Campeche, Tropical Storm Watch for Belize City to Belize/Mexico border and from Campeche to Sabancuy.
Hazards:
Rain: 3-6inches, isolated 12inches, possible Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico/Belize today thru Wednesday with possible flooding/mudslides.
Wind: Tropical Storm possible across Yucatan by this afternoon, hurricane winds possible tonight.
Official Info from US National Hurricane Center issued at or before 2,5,8 & 11 am/pmEST (could be hourly at landfall if significant changes are detected): NHC
Satellite imagery/loops (updated every 30-minutes ( 25min delay from when taken): Sat images
An eye clearing out, continues to strengthen. Will make landfall later tonight near Cat1 hurricane intensity. Heavy rains, some winds and surge of 2-4ft near and to the north of where center makes landfall.
11pmEST 7 August 2017: Winds 60mph, moving WNW 14mph, pressure 995mb. Making landfall in Mexico very soon. Will reemerge in Bay of Campeche sometime Tuesday, could become a hurricane by Wednesday before making a second landfall in Mexico.
I've been in night time hurricanes/remnants...no fun when you cant see anything and all you hear is the wind for hours on end and occasional crashing trees.
Sunset satellite:
Earlier view today from Cancun, Mexico (storm landfalling well south of there):
11amEST 8 August 2017: Winds 45mph, moving WNW 13mph, pressure up to 1001mb. Weakening as expected over land (water is its fuel source), mostly across the Yucatán now, will emerge later today into Bay of Campeche and begin to restrengthen. Slight southward tic in track so may or may not have time to reach hurricane strength before making landfall in Mexico again. Radars not operating in the area it'll make landfall at later this week currently.
Franklin has emerged this evening (Tuesday) into the Bay of Campeche with a VERY small core, can allow for more rapid intensification. Hurricane Hunters already just off the Mexico coast monitoring.
8amEST 9 August 2017 - Franklin strengthening quickly - pressure has dropped 7mb in just a couple hours (pressure changes then winds follow a few hours later; pressure falls = stronger storm/higher winds coming, pressure rises then weakening).
Two hurricane hunter aircraft in storm monitoring it. Winds 70mph, moving West 13mph, pressure 987mb. Will be a hurricane very shortly today, may even try to make a run at Cat2 intensity. Landfall overnight tonight into Mexico.
