Entergy says 'catastrophic transmission damage'...I'm assuming they mean transmission tower may have sustained damaged or downed by that but no details as of yet. New Orleans is now in the dark.
Sun 8pCDT,9pEDT: Max sustained winds 115mph (185km/h), moving NW 9mph (15km/h), pressure 947mb. Still Cat3, almost down to Cat2 now. Due west of New Orleans by about 30miles(50km), 45miles(75km) SE of Baton Rouge.
Obs 8pCDT,9pEDT:
Surge, listed from East to West, tide coming in helping raise levels as well:
Pensacola, FL: +1.8ft (Steady/rising with high tide)
Dauphin Island, AL: +2.4ft (Steady)
Coast Guard Sector, Mobile, AL: +3.3ft (rising with high tide)
Pascagoula, MS: +3.5ft (Rising)
Bay Waveland Yacht Club, Bay St. Louis, MS: +6.9ft (rising)
Shell Beach, LA: +4ft (falling...wind direction is pushing water away from this sensor, pushing water North towards Pearlington / Bay St. Louis)
New Canal Station, LA (Lake Pontchartrain at New Orleans): +3.4ft (steady/rising)
Carrollton, LA along MS River (SW side of New Orleans): +2.3ft(Wind pushing water away from this station across Lake Pontchartrain).
Pilottown, LA: +1.8ft (Falling)
Pilots Station East, SW Pass, LA: +1.9ft (Steady)
Grand Isle, LA: +3ft (this gauge may be experiencing issues)
Port Fourchon, Belle Pass, LA: No longer reporting
Berwick, Atchafalaya River, LA (just SW of Morgan City): +0ft (Steady)
Amerada Pass, LA: 0.3ft (rising)
Eugene Island, LA: -0.5ft (rising, below normal tide level tho)
Fresh Water Canal Locks: -0.7ft (rising, below normal tide level tho)
Calcasieu Pass, LA: +0.4ft rising
Reminder on surge: Only so many gauges around. Wind direction may push water away from a sensor or to it's West or East causing it to appear normal or lower, but wind may be pushing water up higher above ground other places.
Flash Flood Emergency for New Orleans and some surrounding regions. With power out and very heavy rains that can dump a few inches per hour, fresh water flooding from rainfall is occurring. Estimated 6-8+inches between 5p-8pCDT so far. SWB New Orleans saying backup power is pumping rain water out of the city, and supplying drinking water, but has lost power to some of the sewage pumps.
Entergy now reporting power issue is a load imbalance of transmission and generation system.
HurricaneTrack's surge cam near Laplace, LA on SW corner of Lake Pontchartrain looks to be showing around 10ft rise in water this evening with the onshore winds pushing water to the West side. Several reports on social media of water into homes.
Sun 9pCDT,10pEDT: Max sustained winds 110mph (175km/h), moving NW 9mph (15km/h), pressure 950mb. Cat2 now. 30miles(50km) WNW of New Orleans, 40miles(65km) ESE of Baton Rouge.
Entergy now saying all 8 transmission lines into the city are 'out of service' which caused a load imbalance taking power generation offline. Power will not be restored tonight.
I'm seeing a mix of unconfirmed and confirmed reports of transmission tower down at/in MS River. I guess we'll have to wait for first light to see what's really going on. Jefferson Parish reporting tower and lines down at Nine Mile Point / Bridge City area.
Just going by radar: worst of the winds likely from very West side or just outside the W side of New Orleans through Laplace & Gramercy; then North to Hammond / Independence, and West to Walker and East side of Baton Rouge (going to be right on the edge of strong winds). Storm and this path of winds moving N-NW. Some of these rainbands even well out into MS will have their own gusty winds as well. As of 935pCDT.
Edit: if you're wanting to follow where the strongest winds likely are then look at radar, it'll most likely be traveling with the ring of heavier (orange/red depending on your app/website of choice) area of rain near the eye.
My last post of the night.
Sun 10pCDT,11pEDT: Max sustained winds 105mph (165km/h), moving NNW 9mph (15km/h), pressure 953mb. 40miles(65km) WNW of New Orleans, 30miles(50km) ESE of Baton Rouge. Core pulling further away from New Orleans now. Feeder rain bands on/off will be possible still. Surge still ongoing.
