I have a 2000 Kia Sportage that has been running great but today it started giving me big problems. It was running great on the highway but when I got to a stop light the moment I took my foot off the gas and the RPMS went below 1000 it stalled.

The car will start but I need to give it gas right away and start rolling. Once I am moving AND keep my foot on the gas it runs great the second I stop it stalls. It will also stall at hight speeds once I take my foot off the gas and the RPMs drop. Like if I am going 65 MPH on the highway but take my foot off the gas and coast.

ANy ideas what this is? Could it be a bad battery? Or is it more likely to be a clogged fule filter or bad Idle Air Control Valve, Mas Air Flow Sensor or the EGR valve?

I am trying to get a feel for the $$ this will cost to fiz because it is an old car and I don't want to spend to much more money on it, but it is dangerous to drive in this condition!

Thanks!

If it otherwise runs OK above 1,000 RPM, then you're on the right track by looking at the TPS, IACV, and MAFS.

A sticking IACV that won't open up as required when the throttle is all the way closed could certainly cause the problem. Perhaps cleaning this will resolve the problem, it's certainly worth a try ... or replace it, they're not very expensive.

Thanks Sunspirit. I will try cleaning the IACV this morning and see if that does the trick. After reading about the process online it doesn't look difficult to remove or clean so I think I can handle it. I just hope that is what is causing my issue. I will post an update later today. Thanks!

How old is the battery? I had this problem on a 2002 Jeep Liberty and it turned out to be the battery. There was enough to start it but not to maintain the fuel pressure without the rpms for the alternator to kick in.
Have it tested.

Check for the simple stuff first like a vacuum leak or an unplugged sensor.

I am having the problem right now as well with my 2009 KIA Sportage. I had the car to the shop 5 times and it never stalled when they had it. It stalled finally one day last week and I had it towed to the shop. They found it to be a faulty MAP sensor. I had it replaced and car ran for 2 days and stalled again today while parked at work. I came out after work which was 5 hours time, It started and ran fine.
I am totally lost and need some ideas on what might be causing this problem

No one listed an engine size, but the OP post is many years old and I am assuming remedied or gone by now. To the other posters, I would check your Crankshaft Position Sensors.
