Let me answer you this way...

As many people around here who carry guns, if a knife wielding maniac were running around threatening people, a good number of armed citizens would be pulling out their weapons ready to put down the suspect with lethal force if he charged anyone. And they'd get "kudos" in the Coeur d'Alene Press and/or Bonner Daily Bee for it. And if a civil suit were ever brought, it would be tossed out of court by a judge, or if it got past that point would suffer brutal jury nullification.

And a slight twist on this:

If you pulled out a gun in alarm with no visible threat, it's very possible you would have one pulled on you instantly. Carrying, concealed or not, is pretty common here and no big deal is made of it.

You might want to find a state that is more dangerous.

But I understand your caution. I am doing some research to find which state I am the least likely to be hit by a meteor. And then I am going to move there.

I've never heard of armed citizens coming to anyone's defense in Idaho or any evidence that the low crime rate is attributed to criminal's fear of gun toting homeowners. I'm a gun owner and all for the 2nd amendment, but this seems to be NRA fantasy more than anything.

To the OP, Idaho is pretty safe and respects gun rights. You'll be fine.

The reports are in the CDA Press from time to time.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I've read the Coeur d'Alene has a higher percentage of retired police officers living there per capita than any place in the country.

While not directly addressing your question it speaks somewhat to the issue of how friendly the area is to self-defense.

This is true. The CDA>>Sandpoint corridor has a very high percentage of retired cops per capita. Back when I was on the job (I retired in '99) it was 2nd highest in the country. I'm sure it's still very high.

And as Elousv mentioned, it makes our local papers every so often...

I don't think this is a silly or awkward question at all. I own 160 acres outside of Moscow. It's frequently used by illegal hunters who trespass without my permission. I would like to confront an armed intruder on my property but would not do so without being armed myself.

So if I approach a couple of armed trespassers on property, an argument ensues and I shoot one of them out of fear for my life, will I be charged with a crime?

I went to the Moscow police department with this question. They told me not to confront an armed trespasser on my property and to call them. Right. I did that and they've never showed up. They simply don't care about enforcing trespassing laws even if the intruders are armed.

A bunch of BS.
