Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the tips, advice, and local info it's much appreciated.

I'm making my first recon of NID next week. I'll be up there for several days and in addition to simply visiting the area I'd like to go on some hikes with the dog. One thing that concerns me is I think I read that Elk and Deer gun season have started. I plan to hike on Canfield Mountain and then maybe south of CDA on the Mineral Ridge National Recreation Trail and Caribou Ridge National Recreation Trail.

Would it be advisable to hike there if there's hunting going on? The dog will be on leash and I can bring blaze orange (is blaze orange a requirement for gun hunting in NID? I thought I read it was optional) but I wouldn't want to upset the hunt for anyone.

Thanks!

not sure about the hunting question but you should also check out Q'emiln Park in Post Falls

As someone who hunts Canfield and knows quite a few others who do, I wouldn't advise hiking there during the first week/weekend of rifle. The season opens Oct. 10th. Not sure about the others you mentioned.

Thanks for the replies, I'll be there the 7th and leaving the 10th, so I should be OK on Canfield. I'll just need to find out about the others.

I am planning on Q'emiln Park and also walking the Centennial Trail a bit.

Keep in mind that although deer and elk will not be in season yet, upland game is and will continue to be while you're here, so the hunters (and hunting dogs) will most likely be out. I would recommend wearing orange and as you said, definitely keeping your dog leashed. You can also get the blaze orange dog collars (we have them for our dogs when they're out in the woods) so that also may be something to consider! Just stay cautious and I'm sure you'll be fine.

I only had time for one hike this trip, Mineral Ridge. Starting out with the fog and ending as a perfect sunny day was fantastic.
