Keep on hatin' then! We installed it last summer. It was my wife's idea and I 100% appreciate her for insisting.

Let's see, did someone say in N ID that you really don't need AC, the hot spells only last a few days or a week?

They use to tell the Newbies in Bend, OR the same thing. After a summer, they usually get the truth burned into them.

One thing I have noticed down here in Boise though, unlike in Bend, the big boxes haven't run out of window/portable ACs or Fans. How about up your way?

This was an off-grid cabin for most of it's existence so AC other than window or portable units are not possible. We did talk oldest daughter and husband into adding AC when they replaced the furnace in their south hill home and they are very happy they did.

It was a culture shock when moving from Texas that our rent house had no central air, because it's just a fact of life down there. Last summer we learned how to open the windows at night to cool everything off and get a head start on the next day. That worked pretty well last year. But clearly this year is a different animal!

We have 3 of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Whynter-ARC-13...dp/B00CHQKISE/
... and 6 of these:
http://www.costco.com/Vornado-High-V....11753027.html

House is a 3,000 sq ft 5 bedroom two-story. There is one AC unit downstairs in the living room, and two AC units upstairs in the kids' loft and our master bedroom (because physics keeps the hot air upstairs). Combining their cooling with the heavy duty floor fans for circulation is keeping us about 76 on 90 degree days, and 78 on the 95 degree days. Keeping things portable gives us the ability to put them away for most of the year. Oh, and dual hose portables are much more efficient than the single hose.

Not us, so no hate should be focused in this direction.

Not really very feasible to add it either, since it's a log home that doesn't have a duct system for forced air heating/cooling (we're all hydronic). We may need to get some of the portable units like Aiden is using.

Given the generally moderate nighttime temperatures it would seem a whole house fan would work well, at least to cool the house at night. We have one in our California house, which also doesn't have AC, and it works great here except for about 1 week a year when the temps don't drop at night.

Dave

Does soaking your neck with a cold towel count? Works for me.

NO AC here, which is why we packed up the RV and hit the coast. Actually need a light jacket right now!

What part of the coast? I'd be over there too but my mom is here in town to see the new grandson. Of course, she is in her RV (with AC) and I'm melting into a puddle of grumpiness and thinking that it's in the high 70's in Anacortes.

Hate on me Misty, I brought a regular size one with me up from Wisconsin by way of Colorado and it works great for the bedroom but the way this single level ranch is laid out, I bought another one for the front of the house. So yes, I have two so you can hate me twice as much.
