That contamination spread northward. Coeur d'Alene lake's bottom is full of mine waste, and I don't recommend eating a fish from those waters.

It's always a good idea to have a well tested anywhere in the panhandle north of Wallace before you buy the place. Most are perfectly fine, but you never know until the water's tested.

Mine contamination isn't just an NID problem. There are mines all over the state that contaminated their surrounding areas. Some of the contamination isn't what most folks think of either; the phosphate mines in the Bear Lake region have contaminated some of the rivers by super-loading them with phosphates, which bring on lethal algae blooms in catch ponds, reservoirs and lakes where the water is quiet and has low current. The algae doesn't harm people as much as livestock, wildlife, birds, and our other critters.

The contamination in the silver valley is much worse than what the EPA says. It's the dust that is everywhere and mine dumps are everywhere and exposed. It has caused a lot of people to have mental health and intellectual issues as well as physical ones. It's a beautiful area but the people are some of most horrible vengeful dimwits I've ever met. I'd suggest the valley only for visiting.
