The student murders are going to change that status of low crime; at least as violent crime goes.

In the long run they're a sad statistical anomaly.

Yes.
Moscow is a peaceful community. Always has been peaceful there, and murder has always been a very rare occurrence.

The city's original name was Hog Heaven, named when Idaho was still a territory. (a few early maps have it titled Hog Hollow)
Teritories all were required to have a university in them before they were admitted into the Union. In 1890, the U of I was in the planning stage, but the location choice hadn't been decided yet.

The territorial government really wanted to show Idaho had enough population to warrant statehood, so they wanted the university's location to be far away from the territorial capital, Boise, the political power center.
Northern Idaho was the best area because it was the wealthiest, full of mines and forests. Hog Heaven was a good choice, because the city had good accessibility by rail, and though not a part of the mining district, was close to it.
But Lewiston was a contender for the university, and it was the larger of the two cities. Lewiston, though, had a poor location, way down in the bottom of a canyon and surrounded by steep hills on all sides.
Lewiston was also our first territorial Capital, and had lost that because it was located in a place that was so difficult to reach. Boise replaced it mostly because of that difficulty. (and because there was an established Federal Army fort there)

The city fathers of the time wanted their town to be the location for the state's university, and Hog Heaven qualified, but the city fathers thought Hog Heaven was too undignified a name for a college town.

So they chose Moscow for their new city name.
In Russian, it means "The City of Peace".
Back then, the name was much more glamorous and classy than it is now, and for true, Moscow was indeed peaceful when the Czars ran Russia. Moscow was the world's glittering capital of the north back in those days.

Today, a newcomer should never say "Mos-cow" when speaking about the Idaho town. the residents have always called it "Mosco", with no W. With the accent on the 'Mos'.

Good history Banjo but don't forget, It was also called Paradise for a short time between Hog Heaven and Moscow. As a matter of fact the local masonic lodge was founded during that time and still bares the name Paradise on the front door as does the main creek that runs through town.

It's interesting that all the names have something to do with paradise.
Heavenly Peace.

But I think the main reason for the name was it followed the fashion of the times. Cairo, Illinois. Paris, Texas. Belgrade, Montana. Oxford, Idaho. Athens, Georgia. Florence, Alabama. Geneva, New York. St. Petersburg, Florida. Vienna, Virginia.

All European city names. They gave a really common little town a bit of exotic European glamor throughout the 19th century.

Thanks for the link. This is very mysterious:

Police previously confirmed that there were two other roommates in the home at the time of the attack, but they were unharmed. These two people were also in the house when police arrived, Moscow Police Chief James Fry said, and no other additional information can be released about what the two people know.
Shouldn't the Moscow community be allowed to know whether those two have been ruled out?

It seems incredible that four people could be knifed to death and two others sharing the house not hear the attack.
