Common sense dictates illegal immigration is a major factor in the increase in ID theft. Who other than illegal aliens would need to steal identities to work in this country or receive benefits? Yes, other criminals commit ID theft, but when SSNs are involved, you can bet your last dollar an illegal is responsible.

if your contention is that identity theft is needed to work, then yes a portion of illegal workers use ID from sources that can be stolen, but theft/fraud is not the only option availible to illegal workers.

Assuming that all employment related fraud was committed by illegal workers [50K] that would mean only 1% of illegal workers were committing ID fraud or theft in 2006.
