If 20 million illegals left, we would still have to rid our country of a good 10+ million more. And, that doesn’t include those who would come after the exodus.
Yes, and even if we really needed the portion that is here illegally to do the low paying seasonal farm work jobs - that's well under 1 million jobs held by illegals. There are only about a million total jobs in agriculture and only about 25% of those jobs are held by illegals. So 10 million left after the 20 million go away would still be an excess of cheap laborers.
But why is this question only ever asked of the USA?
Did their own countries have any problem with them leaving? Are their fellow citizens wringing their hands over the loss of them?
If leaving their own countries was a positive thing for those countries, why wouldn't it be positive for the USA?
Unfortunately, the source for this thread is an article that, while claiming to have been subjected to 'due diligence', contains very few references, nearly all of which are to other media, and several of which are broken links, in spite of the article having only been published recently. Only 3 or 4 of the references are to actual research.
I can understand the feelings of those who want illegal immigrants to go away, because these 'illegals' serve as a constant reminder of the fact that people in the rich world will gradually lose much of the economic upper hand that they currently enjoy. Sure, maybe illegal immigrants do repesent a net burden to state and federal coffers (although we don't have evidence either way here) - getting rid of them will not alter the fact that, under a globalised version of capitalism, low and medium skilled jobs (ie, the jobs that the majority of us do) will be given to the people who can do them for the least in return. Under our economic system, illegal workers leaving the US won't free up jobs for Americans, they will take their jobs with them, and Americans will just eat more Mexican strawberries, instead of strawberries grown by Mexicans in California.
Americans, like others in the rich world but more so, because of their hitherto dominant position, want to have their cake and eat it. When they are consumers or employers, they ruthlessly demand cheap goods and cheap labour; as employees, they want to be paid more than in any other region of the world. Increasingly, American (and European) middle and working classes will become a dead weight to the elites of their countries, and to global elites - that is, until they realise that they must get down on their hands and knees, and start working like Mexicans.
I'd smile, then push to get the remaining illegal aliens out of America...
Then there would no longer be a need for bi-lingual documents/signs etc... (save a ton of $$$$)....
No longer when I call a business would I have to hear "Press 1 for English, 2 for spanish"
I'd suspect southern California would be almost deserted.......
i would suspect that a lot of californians who have fled california would come back, and california's economic picture would drastically improve -with the producers returning.

so you ignored the entire article, which showed them CONSUMING services?
what are mostly poorly educated people (many of whom barely speak english, certainly a disadvantage for them) with higher than normal childbirth rates going to do to CONTRIBUTE to a wealthy country (as you put it) ?
common sense would tell you that they would need more services than they could possibly offer.....
why do you think mexico encourages these "valuable" people to march across our border?-it becomes our problem, not mexico's......

don't care what anyone else thinks really. i know how hard many americans work and how increasingly difficult things are becoming here for them.
common sense seems to have left the building when it comes to what "illegal immigrants" add in terms of value to this country, like our GDP is going to skyrocket by letting them "do the jobs that americans won't do". there aren't enough jobs here as it is, and mexico's official unemployment rate is lower than ours.
as it stands, mexico turns their own citizens over to us to become our problem-and it isn't our problem. why isn't mexico addressing the needs of its own citizens?
let mexico come up with solutions for its own citizens and its own economy.
Seems to want to call anyone from the middle east terrorist. Not everyone from another nation is illegally here.
