Didn't need to. There was no such thing as a passport back then nor were there any immigration laws.

Uh; why are you busting only on the US, Canada and LatAm? Many other groups of people did the SAME things, like stronger American Indian tribes taking down weaker ones back in the day. Sheesh!

Yeah, but there are legal citizens here who cannot get jobs because they are taken by illegals because they work cheaper and with no record of their existence, they are paid under the table at whatever the employer wants to pay them. The 'Now Hiring' sign comes down and we are stuck outside. Seems there are more benefits being here illegally than being born here. If they were to get a SS# then they would be paying taxes. But as long as they can stay as they are, we pay the taxes for them and pay for their food stamps, WIC, and anything else they ask for.

If everyone could live here for free, not work, pay no taxes, and get free food(provided by a government that gets no tax money), this country would fall apart even worse. If every illegal became legal, started paying taxes(instead of feeding off yours and mine), this country would, believe it or not, see a large jump in revenue. You would be so shocked at how many illegals make up our population. And you're feeding everyone of them. You are paying their rent and supplying all of the medical care that you already have to pay for to support your own care. You are paying for yourself and them. They just sit back and smile!!!!

It's not illegal to come to this country. It's illegal to come to this country and bypass immigration.

There is no country that has easier immigration laws than the USA, many Mexicans as well as others manage to immigrate here legally but immigration cannot be the free-for-all that it's become.

There is also another way for people to make a better life for themselves and that is to fix their own country. In reality, since you mentioned Mexico, Mexico has a growing middle class, the USA does not. In Mexico if someone finishes an education, delays starting a family until after finishing school and getting a job and marriage, that person stands a very good chance of being middle class in Mexico. Sometimes making a better life means putting in some effort to making yourself better whereever you are. Mexico has a lower unemployment rate than the USA. Millions of Americans are currently unemployed -- the jobs should go to Americans first.

Also Mexico is a relative wealthy nation, there are people in the world far more impoverished --- if making a better life was the reason to come here, there are others who should be in line ahead of them but don't worry -- there are the offices at the border for those who bother to make the effort to come legally.

In spite of the legal restrictions, there were an estimated 12-million immigrants living illegally in the U.S. as of 2008, up from 3.5 million in the 1990's. Six million Mexican-born immigrants make-up 52-percent of these numbers. Just a few perspectives to add economic reality to the illegal immigration problem:

- Social services for illegal aliens were estimated to cost American taxpayers $70 Billion per year (2004 est). - Most current estimates for costs of illegal alien services since 1996 is almost 400 trillion dollars.
- State and local governments spend some $4 billion a year to provide health care to illegal aliens and their U.S.-born children and $20 to $24 billion to educate children from illegal alien households.
- The drain by illegal aliens on American tax monies lowers the quality in education and services that belong to legal American citizens.
- Illegal aliens are siphoning the resources out of the U.S. to other economies. 10 billion dollars annually are sent from U.S. to Mexico. Almost 22 trillion dollars have been wired to Mexico since 1996
- Illegal immigrants do not assimilate into U.S. society and are causing a splintering of society along racial and cultural lines.
- Illegal immigration threatens America quality of life. It is linked to drug smuggling, human sex trade, murder, and other crimes, which threaten the safety of Americans and increase the burden on the US law enforcement system and resources.
- Illegal activity should be punished not rewarded. Illegal aliens show contempt for the values and laws that make America the land of opportunity and desirable to reside in. They abuse the generosity and compassion of the American people. They belittle all immigrants who reside in America legally.

10 reasons to oppose illegal immigration protection policies

As with so many modern issues, there is more to illegal immigration than the simple 'touchy-feely' notion that ever everyone should be allowed to become American citizens "on demand."

Very nice post and well thought out. If more folks would read this there would not be any questions. Except for those who wish to gain Illegal entry in this country.

Wow. Bet you thought that was more clever than it really is.

Irrelevant. Immigration laws not in place at the time. Now EVERY nation on earth has them, including those in "the Americas" that are not the United States.

Plus, Columbus didn't settle in the United States, and this thread is about the United States.

Just deport any illegal alien found. E verify for ALL people working in the US would catch a lot right there because they'd be starved out.

They did, en masse. Difference? It was desired (America needed the help) and there was little to NO social net. Ergo the development of neighborhoods by race. They stuck together. They had to. They also went to work, not lived off the dole (for the most part). I like to call them the Hispanics of a century ago...although they were Irish, Italian, and myriad of other races. They came here for opportunity, not handouts.

Fast forward 100 some odd years. They are now Doctors, Lawyers, Businessmen/women. It takes/took time. Were there problems? You bet. However, there were endless opportunities and White House that was overtly friendly to business.

In 1900, 114 years ago, the US had a population of roughly 76,000,000. Today? 315,000,000. That we know about. Roughly what, a 420% increase. Said another way, 114 years ago there was 1/4th the amount of people walking about the US. Same land mass, just 75% less folks.

At some point, the lifeboat known as the US driven by the US Taxpayer becomes "full". I think it's time to consider hanging that blinking neon "No Vacancy" sign on Ms. Liberty's arm, don't you? We have all the "teeming" masses we can afford. They no longer come by boat, but simply walk in. That, or land in JFK and claim, "political asylum". Whatever means, it seems they are a whooooooooole lot better off now than some broke Irishman with $5 in his pocket landing at Ellis Island 114 years ago.

I suppose if we were willing to "relax" the EPA standards and start pumping crap in the air like China, we could bring a bunch of immigrants in willing to have their limbs torn off in industrial "accidents". Have to tame the trial lawyers but, short of that, we don't need the continuing build up.

Times change. It's time we changed. Shut the doors. We're full. We don't have enough jobs as it is for the 315,000,000 already here. No need to import more in search of the same work. And now, the White House is "encouraging" some to contemplate work part-time, live off your neighbor. All that entrepreneurial spin is just that. Do ya' think if they had an entrepreneurial mindset they might already be trying to build a business??? I don't know too many with a "part-time work ethic" that are hell bent on working 60-80 hours a week to build a business, do you?

Nope, shut the doors, give out maps to Canada, the Soviet Union, or pick-your-despot in Africa. Let them see what they can do there. And for all the Paki's, Hindu's, and Chinese trained at our finest universities, send them back. Plenty of Americans already vying for their jobs as it is.

We are the 3rd most populated country in the world. Right behind India and just in front of Indonesia. Brazil gets honorable mention for being 5th. This is one race I don't want to be number 1. Just ask China. They penalize families for having more than one kid.

Can you even imagine broaching the subject let alone acting on it here in the US??? Oh the humanity!!! Nope, shut the door, lay land mines, strafe them, whatever, no more.

Please.
