True, and not everyone was detained. Also, not all of those detained were deported. Anyone able to document up front that they were legal were not detained and those that were able to procure documentation afterwards were released.
The documentation review was only initiated after a complaint of activity that was against the law. If they had not begun their singing at such an early time of day and created a disturbance for other campers the law would not have been called and they could have completed their retreat without consequence.
By that logic, the White House is a religious site as well. I am sure that plenty of past presidents did an enormous amount of praying they would not get caught during their terms.
I know there are lots of people visiting it everyday who pray the president will get caught too.

The above incident is a textbook example of what not what do: if being a lawbreaker of which an illegal immigrant qualifies as---------fly 'under the radar' AKA do not call attention to one's self, rhetorically speaking.
Since when are churches excuses for breaking the law? If a group of shoplifters or bank embezzlers formed a church, would that provide them some excuse, some immunity from the laws?

Everything you named is a felony. illegal immigration = misdemeanor.

But -- if you like -- what if a group of people who wish to drive 100 mph or otherwise break traffic laws, formed a church -- would that let them off the hook? Would that make them immune from traffic laws?

Caught 2 or more times crossing the border-----that would constitute a felony.
