The thing is, most illegals come here to work. Adopting Spanish as a secondary official language would help them in their labors. And they would be more likely to seek citizenship, and then no longer be illegal immigrants. All good, right?

Whats essentially being proposed here is that we adopt part of the lifestyle of the criminals/illegal aliens in order to understand and negotiate with them, and encourage them to legalize themselves. (which they cannot do unless WE/our govt. are complicit in this act) The reason that this idea is silly is for the same reason that it is silly to suggest that if each of us would only learn how to live as a fugitive and lurk around street corners ourselves and maybe even make murdering a part of our every day lifestyle, it would encourage murderers and robbers to stop murdering others and assimilate to civility. It sounds nonsensical in that context, and it is nonsensical in the context that it is being proposed here.
