Hello,

I'll be moving in a month to IL for a job at Great Lakes. Can I please get feedback on Wheeling and Vernon Hills in regards to if it's a safe area to live in, or which areas in those cities I should avoid living in. Also if you can add information on Des Plaines it would help has I heard there's a lot of freight train traffic, it's a air path for planes flyovers and it's a flood zone. My wife will be working in Chicago hence me trying to stay in between Great Lakes and Chicago. I read AH,BG, MP are all good areas so just those two I'm currently interested in. Oh I'm looking for a 3-4 BDRM 2.5 bath with 2car garage. max rent is $2000. Appreciate your input even if directing me to other areas. Would love to be close to a city type community. Thanks very much

$2000 will get a decent to nicer TWO bedroom apartment in most towns but if you want / need 3 or 4 bedrooms I would caution that with that budget you are gonna find some very unpleasant places...

DesPlaines is not nearly so horrible as your list of negatives implies -- there is a only a tiny portion of the town where any kind of water / flooding issues exist, similarly the relative level of O'Hare noise only effects a very small part of the residential portions as flight paths are centered over industrial parks. And it is simply not true that there is any kind of unusual volume of rail traffic through the town. It is worth looking at.

The price point of $2k is unlikely to get you into a nicer part of Mt.Propect and the portions closer to O'Hare / industrial areas are probably worse than the nice spots of DesPlaines.., same is true for Arlington Heights...

Buffalo Grove is too far and too pricey.

Wheeling is not bad, especially if you avoid the biggest apartment complexes.

Vernon Hills is the toughest to describe -- there spots that are the district shared with Linertyville that are quite nice and then a little up the street it falls off rapidly. If you shop carefully you can get a spot in the nice part of town for just a little more than the less desirable spots...

Chet,

Appreciate the response. What about Mundelein can I rent a good place for 2K and is it far from Great Lakes and Chicago?

Vernon Hills would generally be preferable to Mundelein and better access to tollway and even Rt 41 would make for easier commute...

Wheeling would be closer to Chicago.

Do kids and therefore schools play into this scenario?

Cubsox fan,

Wife applies to the scenario no kids. I just want to make sure that our traveling distance is about as equal as possible between Naval Station Great Lakes and Chicago. So from what I'm hearing Wheeling and Vernon Hills are my best choice?

Is wife working in downtown Chicago? Would it be feasible for her to take the Metra to work?
