Hi there. As a frequent visitor to Illinois, I've noticed that the interstates have a 65 mph speed limit, and I've had to experience the agony of driving that speed on I-55 to Chicago. Ohio recently raised the speed limit to 70, and Iowa and Missouri both have 70 mph speed limits. Kentucky also has a speed limit of 70. I thought Wisconsin was still 65. I also am pretty sure Indiana has a 70 mph speed limit. Is there any possibility that Illinois will follow its neighboring states and raise the speed limit to 70?

Finally!!! I've always wondered this when I go from Michigan to Indiana and then to Iowa. Just raise it to at least 70 already...

It hasn't happened YET. The Senate Bill still has to be approved by the full legislative body. There is a lot of push back from LEO across the state. There is far more to the road system in Illinois than a couple of Interstate routes that are two of the most heavily traveled routes. in the United States.

I can see why the limit is 65 in the more populated areas but 65 in central and downstate is just too slow for a rural area.

70 mph downstate makes sense as it is 70 mph in rural areas in the neighboring Midwestern states. It irks me a bit how the toll road in Chicago has a 55 mph speed limit. Clearly the limit here should be at least 60 or even 65 mph. If you get caught going 31 mph above 55 mph (86 mph or higher), you're automatically charged with a criminal violation / misdemeanor. A 60 mph or 65 mph limit would create a more appropriate cushion IMO. The flow of traffic on this highway is already ABOVE the speed limit, so why have the limit set so low? IMO, the 55 mph limit makes a bit more sense on the truly urban stretches of highway in Chicago (ie. Kennedy, Dan Ryan, Eisenhower, Stevenson), but not on the very suburban 294, and toll road sections of 94, 90 & 88 (I might've left out some other highways).

The speed limit on I-57 and I-80 is way too low. Raise it to 70 MPH already!!
