Years ago, I met some professional grad students (i.e. law, MBA), and they all lived in Savoy.

Stay near the campus its safer. Urbana is dangerous at night...I live there now and if you do live in urbana live on the area that borders the campus. I literally live on the corner of illinois and lincoln and it seems good. I feel like the fratty area in champaign is safer, but its also riddled with annoying partying undergrads, which I guess would suck as a profesisonal. Downtown champaign seems like a really nice area to live in. One area I reccomend is the area right behind grainger near county market, and the ones right next to beckman institute (dont go any further than provena hospital). Again not safe alone at night but no area in champaign urbana is anymore otherwise relatively decent.
