We are thinking of moving there but, while l have a drivers' license, I prefer to walk everywhere.
It seems that the only grocery stores are outside the town such as the Piggly Wiggly or Walmart.

Nothing in town?

Thanks very much.

I'm not aware of any grocery stores or drug stores in the historic town center - only farmers markets. When possible we buy what we can from the farmers in markets held throughout the county. In the winter the city holds a farmers market every few weeks at the Arts Center.

We just moved to the Galena Territory from downtown Chicago and walked everywhere there as well. For the most part Galena is a car-dependent community. That being we probably walk more now, but its hiking for fun - not for errands.

The patterns of where "regular retail" stores are in Galena relative to the "historic district" is frankly not all that different than in other "resort areas". If you look at most of the desirable homes in the Lake Geneva WI area they are not walkable to the regular retail stores. In SW Michigan I suppose you could walk to Barneys in downtown New Buffalo from some of the places near the harbor, but carrying more than minimal amount of grocerys is going to be quite awkward along the mostly narrow roads that link the homes nearest the water...

Technically when the weather is OK one could bicycle between Galena's Piggly Wiggly and the historic town center BUT the steepness of the roads makes even that a pretty risky choice ...
