Hello All,

I may be accepting a job soon in Evansville. It will be a big move as you can tell from the title of this thread.

I was hoping someone can point me in the right direction in terms of finding a decent apartment, townhouse, condo, or home to rent.

I have 3 kids. 4 year old son, 2 year old daughter, and a 1 month old daughter. With that being said, the place i'm looking for needs to be at LEAST a 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom. Preferably 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom if it's within my budget. The area doesn't have to be the best of the best but i want it decent enough for my kids to grow up safe in and go to school in.

My budget for rent is $700 a month but the cheaper, the better

You should be able to find something within your housing budget without too much trouble.

this is a quick answer because I have to leave soon for work. Try First Ave/North Park or East Side area. Loose rule of thumb is that the higher number the address, the better area you'll find. Houses to rent can be tricky. Courier & Press (newspaper) has the best listings.

You have kids, so I'd avoid downtown and south side. Southeast is hit and miss, parts are great, parts of it flood whenever it rains heavily.

Here's a brief, simplified commnt on the east/west divide:

I know some older West siders who refuse to go east of Highway 41 (unofficial dividing line) except for a funeral or a ball game.

Because the East side is flat, it is easier to develop. The East side has grown quickly since WWII. The mall and shopping centers are mostly east, and East siders, as a rule, are more affulent, less likely to be natives, and less likely to share a cup of coffee on their neighbor's back porch. Not that East siders are less friendly, but the West side life style seems more quaint in those areas where the families go back a few generations.

These are wide stereotypes, and of course there are exceptions. There are shoddy areas east of 41, and there are some magnificent homes on the west side.

One great resource is the website of the Vanderburgh County Clerk. Lots of info, Vanderburgh County : Home (County)

Thanks for the help. I can find only a handful of places within my budget but you said it shouldn't be too hard. Got any links of some good apartments? Thanks

You can try these. Can't speak about them from personal experience.

Evansville is a great town, but has some sketchy areas. Go and visit and learn what you can about a given neighborhood and schools before you settle.
Visit the prospective area day and night and on weekends to get the "feel" of the place. If you don't get a warm fuzzy keep looking.

All the best!
