I just got a new job in Richmond Indiana and I will be moving down that way. I am looking to rent a home. What neighborhoods should I avoid? Should I stay in the city or try to find a house to rent in the country? Any advice would be great!

I havent been in Richmond in a few years but when I left the Northwest side was pretty slummish and the SW side was pretty nice. North and South sides were a bit in-between. You could always just move out to Williamsburg its pretty quiet out there. Bout a 20 minute drive.

From my memories of going to Richmond a couple times(back when my brother used to attend Earlham), I loved the Reeveston part of town. Particularly inbetween 17th St. and 23rd St were my favorite blocks, but the ones inbetween 13th and 17th weren't bad either.

If you want to live outside of town, I can't make as many suggestions, since I only did a few jaunts outside of town. Centerville is nice, and my brother's friend used to live in Dublin. My preference of the communities outside of Richmond, but within Wayne County, is Centerville. I also made a brief trip to Fountain City, but I wasn't wowed by Fountain City for whatever reason. The Levi Coffin House is a nice historical home and museum to visit, though.

Im actually shocked to hear about jobs in Richmond. Yeah the Reeveston area is/was pretty nice. I had an Aunt that lived on South 22nd across the street from a middle school (i forget the name of it...Test, maybe?). Pretty nice neighborhood right across from Glen Miller Park.

Depends on what you're looking for. The west side (further west than NW 5th street) is decent. Mostly old folks and young families. Small homes mostly, unless you move into a few of the newer areas on that side of town (Toschlog areas or Hidden Valley).

The north side is good once you get further north than the old hospital. A little more to do than the west side, but not build in quite the same neighborhoodly way.

The east side is decent as well. Mostly when you go further east than 15th street, although there are some nice parts of 13th and 14th when you go pretty far south.

If you're looking outside of the city, I would highly suggest Fountain City. It is convenient to everything in Richmond (7 minutes to grocery stores, and a few places to eat on the north side, and about 15 minutes to better shopping, movies, etc on the east side). I wouldn't suggest Centerville although some people LOVE IT. There is nothing real wrong with it at all but it has pretty high property taxes compared to the rest of the county, and doesn't have the same small town feel of Fountain City because it is so close to Richmond (they touch).
