I love being from the Hoosier state! I was born and raised in Indianapolis for 6 years, moved to Maryland, and now I'm back in NWI! And it's great to live here!

However, it seems the economy is a little on the stagnant side. Does anyone have any information on how the economy is doing NOW?

Also, how do you think the economy will be looking in 5 years? 10 years?

Thanks to all that respond

Stagnant still. But a cheap place to live.

Autos down and out. One new Honda plant will help but we will see.
Manufacturing old and moving out.
Housing cheap and available.

Lilly has cut 900 Indy jobs in the last few years and has more coming (est. is 5% a year.)

and on and on.

Economy is non-existant, sort a speak.
Any decent paying job is either in Chicago, Ford (Hegwisch) or one of the few remaining mills, the latter two are always on the verge of going away.
White collar jobs don't exist in NWI.

Not cheap to live however in my opinion, especially considering the average wage in Lake county. Taxes are getting higher and higher. Can't touch a house under $225k.
Sure in some respects it may be "cheap", however good luck finding a decent wage.

the economy is great and jobs abound all across Indiana. Many are working 3 of them to try to make a living wage.

Too hard to make a really sound judgement call because quite frankly - the entire U.S. with rare exception is suffering from a stagnant economy. State by State you'd be hard pressed to identify more than perhaps 4 that are really doing well right now. Indiana's economy overall isn't doing any worse than average in my opinion. The nice thing is that the cost of living and cost of real estate is very reasonable. The bad thing is that you better have a job lined up when you move here... or work in a high demand profession such as law, medicine, or engineering.

Indiana Third in Job Loss
Dated: 03/08/2007

Only two other states lost more jobs in January than Indiana, according to statistics released Thursday by the US Department of Labor.

Indiana lost 12,500 jobs in January, a decline of .4 percent from December. Compared to one year ago, Indiana has 4,400 fewer jobs. Indiana ranks 49th in the nation for the percentage of job growth during 2006.

Only Michigan and Wisconsin lost more jobs in January than Indiana
