Just remember that Indiana is a very large state, and, as a result, your chances of being injured by a twister are infinitesimal. Many twisters do touch down there every year, but they tend to be so spread out and short lived- generally less than 2 minutes on the ground- that your risk is generally quite small. The only big tornado that I've ever seen up close, was an F3 that tore through the western (Meadowthorpe and Mercer Road) part of Lexington,Ky in 2004( I was within less than 100 yards of it, as it passed through Enterprise industrial park). Neither of the twisters seen by me in Indiana ever actually made landfall, and the bigger one dissipated before the local authorities could turn on the sirens, and these guys were definitely on the ball. So, please follow the good preparedness advice given by others here, and you will be just fine.

For education on this stuff...you can contact the National Weather Service near you (or wherever you are going in Indiana). They have a program where you can attend a talk on severe weather...or simply ask them questions over the phone or via email. They are the best resource out there for this kind of info.

Good luck!

Wow, that must have been pretty intense seeing one of them. Thanks! There was actually a tornado warning in NH last week. Rare.

NH as in New Haven? I'm about 4-5 blocks from City Hall I didn't hear any warnings.

I haven't seen a tornado in the 36+ years I've lived in Central Indiana. Seems like the ones we do have move through the northern middle section of the state more than anywhere else, but I could be wrong.

Currently I live in New Hampshire. The warning or watch was for sourthern New Hampshire, which is rare.

But within a month or two I'll be living in Indiana

I loved it. It was even better than I thought it would be. Everything you need, Columbus has. I'm from a very small town in Northern New Hampshire where everybody hangs out in Wal-Mart, LOL. But, down in Columbus there so much more to do. My son has plenty of sports to choose from, a skateboard park he tried out and loved. My wife does have family down there which have been very helpful. I worked out at Total Fitness for a week. Excellent gym. A lot more construction going on than where I'm from. So many developments. Very Flat there, too, which I really liked, since I've been born and raise in the mountains.

All my life, I've been living in the same small town. The past five years I knew I needed a change. I visited Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Nevada, Arizona, Indiana, and so many more. In all the states I've been (except Indiana) I felt like I didn't fit in. But, Indiana, I felt like I could fit in very easy. Everybody was so nice down there and helpful. I think this will be great and I'm very excited to move there. And Nervous, too, since I've never moved before.

My goal is to move in July, hopefully. I just started sending out Resumes to Construction Companies and started looking into some apartments.
