Oh, check into Terre Haute, too. BUT, it is kinda old and has a lot of crime.

Default Bloomington all the way

I think Bloomington is by far your best bet. It has a small-town feel, but a great many cultural offerings, a supportive community, and opportunities for involvement in all kinds of activities/causes - social, environmental, political, etc. Plus, there's a pretty good art community. And it's VERY gay-friendly by Indiana standards.

You might want to avoid rural small towns...people tend to be VERY closed-minded in such area.

But I guess it depends on what you call a small community, because from my perspective Bloomington is quite big.
