Class HS bball in Indiana has been ruined by private schools recuiting.
Classic example is Bishop Luers in FTW.
Deshaun Thomas was recruited by coach James Blackmon.
Thomas grew up across the street from Bishop Dwenger.
If he truly wanted a "Catholic" education he would have went to school there.
Coach Blackmon made sure that he went to Luers.
Luers is a 2A school and plays against SMALL schools so they dominate
the State championship finals.
In 2010 they will go for their 3rd staight 2A championship.

Not to mention that Luers point guard is Coach Blackmons nephew from Marion,In.
This has destroyed the spirit of the game....

Just look at the girls teams in the 2010 finals.
Canterbury 1A,Luers 2A and Concordia 3A..
All private schools.
Coincidence?
I think not.
High schools recruiting to win championships...
Disgusting!

IHSAA Basketball All-Time Semi-State Champions

I'm not native to Indiana, so I'm not nearly as fluent in Indiana HS basketball history as some, but I don't think the Catholic schools were exactly pushovers prior to class basketball. According to the above link, a few Catholic schools (Andrean, Brebeuf and Cathedral) all won semi-states prior to the institution of class basketball. Of course, in football such recruiting has been going on for years, and the Catholic schools are highly competitive.

But let's not lose sight of what's really important here. If a Catholic school is willing to take a promising kid from a tough environment, give him a good education and put him in a position to go to a good college and become a productive citizen, then I'm all for it.

It's by no means only something that happens only in Indiana. But I have to agree, ultimately it's about education anyway.

There's a charter school in Gary that's turning into nothing but a basketball factory ... Bowman academy ...

As a former basketball player when basketball in indiana really mattered ... when it was minus the class system, the same old arguments about private school recruiting were rampant. Look at Culver Academies ... I remember when we played them, there were hardly any local kids on those teams ... even played against one of Steinbrenner's daughters (yea, she had to work really hard to make the team ... oy!).

So anyway, this is nothing new and it's not exlcusive to Indiana either. I do find it disheartening that it's always the public school athletes that get suspended by the IHSAA after "thorough investigations" ... I also remember what that corrupt organization did to Rick Fox his senior year in HS in Warsaw ...

I remember all the rumblings about Greg Odon all of a sudden showing up at Lawrence North .... there were cries of recruiting and LN is a public school.

So again, nothing new ... happens, it stinks, but unless the IHSAA gets a handle on it .. well, it's the same old song and dance.

The latest polls, however ...

all public with just a couple private ...
