Hi I am moving from chicago to Marion county IN. I would like to know if there are good or bad areas, decent rental homes because I have children I would like a home not an apartment and schools. I also wouldn't mind an area like a quiet suburb type area.

Since you wouldn't mind a suburban type area, you can pick a collar community and chances are you won't be rolling dice as much with schools as you would be with schools in Marion county. If you want to look in Marion County .. go with Washington Twp schools first, on the far north side. I'd give Lawrence Twp schools on the east side of Marion County a second ... their schools are a system of magnet schools with specialized concentrations (I think they still use that system).

Carmel, Noblesville, Westfield and Fishers are the good schools north of Marion County, while the schools is Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg are good on the west side of MC. The Center Grove school system in White River Twp is aces on the south side of MC, while New Palestine and Mount Vernon are good on the east side.

Welcome to Indiana.

Lawrence Township schools do not have "magnets." There are two elementary schools with special programs that students can apply for, no matter where they reside in the district. There are no magnets at the middle school or high school level, however.

Lol. Makes sense. Or cents.

And I don't really know anyone that's come from Chicago to Indy. I've only been here about 3 years. The people I'm thinking of came from northern IN or MI.

And we're not super happy about moving but are getting used to the idea.

Dont stress out about it
Indianapolis has plenty to offer and do.
You dont need a mega city of 10M people to be entertained haha. Plus there are Lakes around Indianapolis and Lake Michigan is only 3 hours away.
The Hoosier National Forest and Brown county are only an hour south too for more recreation.

Also people moving from Michigan to Illinois doesnt surprise me.
Northern Indiana isnt that much of a surprise either. depending on the area.
However the Flight to Northwest Indiana to escape Illinois taxation probably offsets or is even bigger than Hoosiers moving to Illinois.

The Illinois policy institute said only 7 states from 1990 to 2010 gave more people to Illinois than recieved. Michigan was one of those states.
Indiana and all neighboring states of Illinois gained more people from Illinois than lost too.
Heck i remember reading 10% of Indiana's population growth alone has been from Illinois.

Wow. That's impressive.

I'm not worried about the lack of entertainment. The things we like most about living here is the urban lifestyle...walking to school and the store, taking public transportation, the EL, Michigan Ave, running along the lake, nice neighborhoods that aren't just white people, etc.

I know Indy has some nice urban areas but we haven't been able to explore them yet. I'll be there tomorrow through Thursday and will spend time in Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, and Irving...something to see if there's anything like what we currently have.

Downtown Indianapolis is very Urban.
Plus its more affordable than similar sized/larger cities in the US
You can get a Condo in Downtown Indy for a much more affordable price.

Meh...it's a nice downtown but there's zero way you could live in the city without a car. I could be wrong but there doesn't seem to be enough grocery stores, bus routes, good schools, etc to make living there with a family a reality.

Don't get me wrong, I like the city and I'll embrace it and enjoy it for what it has rather than complain about what it is not. I'm just mentioning these things because I know they will be the hardest things from our current situation to replace in Indy.

well Mass Transit will be *worked on* next year.
Your best bet is to help get involved with the community to embrace an expansion of mass transit.
