Yes, the game itself is going to sell out even if it was in frickin' Alaska, but there is soooooooo much more money to be made outside the actual stadium on SB Sunday, and I think the non-attendees are much more likely to spend their hard earned dollars in a warm, outdoor friendly climate than they would in a potentially frigid environment like Indianapolis.

PS. 60 in January is an anomaly, and I don't think the SB planning committee is going to roll the dice several years in advance on that happening on one particular weekend in a historically chilly climate
I think the Indy 500, Brickyard 400, and F1 events plus the NCAA final 4 tourny we host every other yr proves otherwise. People are willing to come here and spend time and dollars partying, shopping, and dining downtown. But no, I don't think they would roll the dice on the weather, but when you look at the layout and close proximity of the sporting arenas to downtown, accompanied with the proven history of past sporting events Indy has hosted, I think weather will be "less" of an issue when making that decision than if the stadium was outside the city

Not entirely untrue, and I'm sure someday soon Indy will be the next northern city to break that southern gridlock, but I still think that for 2007's bid the combination of a warmer climate and a state of the art arena with - I can't stress this enough - 27,000 more seats made Dallas an easy lock. You're right about the lay out and Indy's past history with hosting sporting events being a huge plus, but the other events you mention are hosted later in the year, when weather would less likely be an issue.

Again, I would not argue indy has the best music scene. I've lived outside of this city for many yrs coast to coast and know there are far better music scenes, but i just don't know I would go as far to say that it sucks. I've lived in places where the Idea of a music scene was cover bands, now THAT is lame. I think losing the Patio was a tragic loss to the music scene here...not sure why they decided to close it, it was always packed when I was there. And I agree with you on the vouge, their "good" shows are to far and few inbetween, but every now and again they come through.

Yeah, but how many of those cities were the size of Indianapolis? I've lived in much smaller towns than this where cover bands were de rigeur and no respectable bands ever came through town, but my point is that for a city of this size Indy has about as bad of a music scene as I've witnessed. Cincinnati and Louisville may be AS bad, but I'd be surprised if they were any worse.

I disagree...Louisville and Cincy both have much larger indie music scenes. Indy gets alot of big name touring acts at Verizon, but the local indie scene is not strong.

Not to pile on Julrey, but what exactly are you looking for in music that you want to come to Indy? I will agree that indie acts don't come in as much as other midwest cities. Maybe some of us could throw some bands your way to go and check out.

I keep up with the national scene quite a bit, but I'm looking for some local bands to scope out. Anything from indie rock to alt-country (is there even any such thing here?) to extreme metal (the latter of which probably has the healthiest sub genre in Indy from what I've seen).

Here's an indie band that's local. Went to college with the drummer:
