Chicago murders: 1 per 9,124.

Indianapolis murders: 1 per 5,964.

How did Chicago's crime decrease while Indy's increased? More police? Better funding? Community involvement?

The homicide rate increased because heroin. Why did Chicago's drop? Hell if I know. Since shootings in Chicago have increased, maybe the homicde rate dropped because criminals have worse aim now.

As far as your claim that crime has increased in Indianapolis, show some stats to back that. I don't think it has.

Considering its reputation of a sleepy suburban midwestern burg, Indy is actually quite a gritty place where you gotta watch your back. I wonder if a show similar to The Wire could be set in Naptown.

Default Murder Rates

Maybe criminals in Indy have better aim than Chicago. A big reason why the homicide rate has dropped in Chicago while shootings are up is due to better emergency care at hospitals. Indy has a reputation as having some of the top hospitals in the country, definitely on par with top hospitals in Chicago.

There were more homicides in 2013 than 2013 and 2014.

Murder is the most severe crime. Does an increase in the murder rate mean all crime is up? No, but it means the most severe of crimes is. People rightly view this as a problem.

Homicides are just about always between two people who know each other. The odds of random citizen becoming a homicide victim are slim. That's not to say we should dismiss homicides; but as is often the case, context is important.
