Carmel is an Indiana suburb. Most people who move there appreciate that. The problem is that the city is increasing its density at a high rate, most likely to raise tax revenue. This might be ok if they were putting in parks in the city center at the same time, but they are not. In my opinion, Carmel will cease being the quiet, safe suburban city is was very soon -- if it has not already. In any event, that won't bring downhill skiing. You still are in Indiana.

Carmel appeals to an affluent demographic. It's not going to go 38th St. anytime soon.

Did you think there would be beaches and ski resorts in central Indiana? What the heck were you expecting?

There are far more logical complaints that can be levied against Carmel, or Indiana in general. However, sections of Indiana do have access to good beaches AND ski resorts, but you're not going to get that in the central part of the state. Didn't you do your research?

Not entirely accurate. In August it usually gets to between 70-74 degrees and stays that way for about a month or so.

Time will tell. However, if one looks at Indianapolis, everywhere along the I-465 corridor where large scale apartments were built, crime and congestion have risen. Carmel’s traffic has gotten substantially worse over the last few years to the point that long lines exist during commute time just to exit roads such as Keystone or 31. Also, there seem to be more reports of crime. As an example, there is currently a string of serial home robberies in the news. Looking at crime maps, the focus of activity is in the city center where density has increased. So yes, Carmel compared to other communities is still ok, but most of its residents did not sign up for congestion or more density.

The fact is that the city is a $1billion in debt. Its bond rating has dropped, and the city planners and mayor are grasping at whatever development they can to make ends meet. However, that approach is not what is good for the city.

That's the price you pay for living in a highly desirable location. Carmel is rapidly urbanizing, it didn't just start a few years ago, it's been in the works for some time now.

I agree with your sentiment on the city government overstepping its bounds and going into serious debt to try to appeal to its affluent citizens. Carmel will run out of land to annex soon, and its increasing urbanity will soon by stymied, and in turn it will soon find steeper shortfalls in increasing revenue, I am predicting. The government will probably be forced with hiking taxes for its residents, which currently are very low at the moment if I am not mistaken.

Yep. And everyone living in Hamilton county knows that congestion is not going down, only up. Its the fastest growing county in Indiana, so you would have to be brain dead to not know density and population is going up. IF you don't like it, sell your home and move to 95% of the rest of Indiana where congestion is not a problem.

Folks, this thread is now closed. OP seems to have left the building, and in another thread she stated she is moving to Florida this summer. Consequently, her opinion of Carmel is moot at this point. This thread serves no good purpose anyway, except that there's some interesting off-topic discussion of beaches in other states.
