Hello,

My wife and are moving to Indianapolis from Memphis, Tennessee and I need help finding a good neighboorhood. We looking for a neighboorhood/suburb that has a low crime rate and excellent schools. We've lived in Atlanta, Huntsville,AL , Dallas, and Birmingham (my hometown) and we're just looking forward to beginning a family and settling down.

Thanks for all your advice!

"good" is pretty subjective.

Identify the limits to your commute, do you like old or new, your price range, what types of schools and amenities are important, etc.

Indy is huge and some like it farther out and some like it closer in. Some prefer family time to driving, etc. Some would like to limit their gas purchases by having the shopping they like closer and some dont care. Some like culdesac lots and some dont care. You get the picture.

Sit down with your wife and talk about from highest to lowest what are the most important things. If you can narrow your search, we all can give you better information. Remember Indy is so huge that none of us even the realtors know it all. We all have our ideas about what is perfect.

So much depends on what you can afford that it will be the first thing along with what commute is desireable which depends on where the jobs are located.

I noticed you said Indianapolis. Check the far NW side of Indy (Pike Township), far NE parts of Indy (Lawrence) or far North (Washington Township). There is a diverse mix of people. Good elem schools in Pike (Fishback Creek, New Augusta South-both year round schools). In Washington Twnshp (Fox Hill Elm, Crooked Creek Elm). I would stick with these schools, although none are horrendous. Check greatschools.com or either .net for school info for the Indy area. Judging by where you lived previously it seems these suburban parts will fit fine if you are looking for a nice working class diverse area.
