For what it's worth, toolbarupdaterservice.exe is lurking in my computer. Every time I reboot, I have to end the process, or it will activate and start rhythmically slamming my CPU usage to 100%
MSE, AVG and Malwarebytes do not detect that, either, but at least I know how to defeat it when it runs. Maybe there is a sub-program in there that is what Firefox is reading and identifying as StartNow.

Uhhhhh you have more house keeping to do. I'm not going to research it for your, but I suggest you Google how to remove it and do so.

Well, first it tells me StartNow is not classified as a worm/virus/trojan.
There is a small chance you can disable the startup process with this:
I would if it was a problem, but it's not. It takes me ten seconds to shut it down a couple of times a month.
By the way, the StartNow question was so simple, I kept looking past it. I just went to control panel, and there it was, and I uninstalled it.
I was going to suggest going to control panel and uninstalling, earlier, but it sounded like you knew that already so I didn't mention it. Control Panel is the first place I go to remove toolbars when I discover my wife or kids have installed one without me knowing.

I can 't see the point of creating a program that everybody hates, and surreptitiously slipping it into their computer, and then leaving it hanging out there in the Uninstall list, in plain sight in the Control Panel. Who'da thunk it? Maybe they were actually wily enough to think that it could be hidden where nobody would ever look for it.
Following up, I installed ToolbarCleaner, which found a dozen toolbars and flushed them. Does anybody know anything about this program that thinks I shouldn't have downloaded it?
I think the malware cleaners classify Toolbars as "potentially useful" programs and do not target them.
One interesting effect. I delete my flash cookies every night before turning off my screen. Normally, there have been about 20-30 of them to be deleted. Since I used Toolbar Cleaner and wiped out about a dozen toolbars, my flash cookie accumulation has been cut in half, and there are now about 10-15 every night.
