Norton is provided with my Comcast account but I've been having some problems with malware and now I get these ads on web pages I've never seen before. Do you guys think MS Security Essentials would be an upgrade? Thanks.

MSE would always be my first choice for free realtime antivirus, norton isn't even on my list. You also need one or two on demand scanners as one app will not find everything, Malwarebytes is a good choice there.

I have a client that got bit by Comcast's freebie Norton (and all the other crap they install) this week.

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it. Just looking for other opinions before I make the change.

A vote for MSE here too. It plays well with my Win7 and I don't have to mess with it other than running a full scan every month. Quick scans are done automatically every day.

Neither.
Norton is more problems than its worth, is too intrusive and doesnt do a good job removing anything and bogs your system down.
MSE: If they cant fix their system in the first place why would you trust them to stop a virus ? Its a waste of time using an MS tool to remove virus/malware when its their problem (for the best part) that it gets there in the first place.

I would look at 3rd party Virus scan and Mal/spyware programs.

An operating systems is a pretty static environment, and slow to react out of the complexity of making changes while assuring those changes don't break what already works.

The roll of an AV is to be reactive to new threats, to detect and block them prior to the vulnerability being mitigated in the OS. MS has had it right for a while, and it is not intrusive nor does it 'nag' like many 3rd party offerings.

If you feel so negatively about Microsoft, might one assume you are not a Microsoft user but use the opportunity to throw a few rocks.
