Everyone acts like investing in a 401k is a must, but most people who have decent careers don't even need the money by retirement. By retirement they have everything paid off and the kids out of the house and likely the house paid off. My parents are like this and now don't even need the money. I personally don't see myself needing it after retirement. Granted I am very good with money and have a good amount in personal investments.
Why would you not want the tax advantages of 401(k)s / Roth IRAs? And potentially a match? You're leaving money on the table. What calculations have you actually done to come to your conclusions?

Hmmm, but even after you pay off your home, you still have a lot of expenses like maintenance, property taxes, home and health insurance premiums, etc. Is social security enough for all of that? And what if you want to have some toys, travel, go out to dinner/events? Do your parents do anything or just hang out at home?
If your company offers a 401k match you should at the least contribute up to that amount. That's free money!

Most people who have decent careers are not as well off as you think they are, statistically.
