I currently live in Atlanta, but my family is from Iowa. My office is having a "Cultural Pot Luck" luncheon and we are all to bring a dish that reflects our culture. It should be pretty yummy as I work with folks who are from Jamaica, Puerto Rico, New Orleans, Boston....

So what suggestions do y'all have for a classic, delicious dish that reflects my Iowa roots?

Thanks!

Well, hogs and corn are traditional Iowa products, so I suggest a nice ham surrounded by pieces freshly cooked corn on the cob.

Maid Rite sandwiches or tenderloins if you want to supply the main staple of the potluck. Otherwise, probably some down homey dish with corn in it.

Yeah - My "Maid Rite" sandwiches (thanks DMRyan) were a hit! Of course, I had to hear multiple people recall the "Rosanne" episode about loose meat sandwiches.... please.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

That's some classic Midwestern potluck fare there. That and cocktail wienies in the same sauce.

MAYTAG BLUE, BABY. Maybe a salad that includes fresh sweet corn kernels and Maytag blue?

Some more random ideas: pork tenderloin (lightly-breaded Northern Midwestern-German/-Czech variety); something with Muscatine melons - fruit (and veggie?) salad, maybe?; Dutch marzipan-filled 'letter S' pastries from Pella; one of the many German-American dishes that a place like the Ox Yoke Inn in the Amana Colonies is known for (Yokey Dokey punch, warm sweet-and-sour potato salad, rhubarb pie, etc... yum!). Maid-Rites (with lots of mustard.. no ketchup ) would be good, as others have suggested, if this is a very informal affair.

Oops.. just noticed that you already had your potluck. Oh well, this can serve as a reference for future Iowa culinary queries, I suppose.

Maid-Rites with mustard??? I have always had them served plain. My mom made them growing up and when we would visit relatives in Ottumwa we always went to The Canteen, but I don't remember mustard. Actually, I don't like mustard, so maybe I just blocked it out, but I didn't know it was standard.

For any of you who are familiar with both Atlanta and Iowa, I explained to my co-workers that Maid-Rites were the cultural equvilent to The Varsity. You just have to experience it!

Interesting! In my family it was always mustard and onions (for those who could deal with onions) or just plain mustard (for those who hated onions - including myself ). Ketchup was considered a total no-no, totally inappropriate on a maid-rite (sort of the way Chicago-style hot dog purists consider that condiment).
