My son is interested in Cornell, and I think that it may be a good fit for him.

Does anyone have any experience with this college? What is the surrounding area like?

Cornell has a very good reputation, but I don't personally know anyone that has gone to the college. Everyone time I've passed through, the campus seems quiet. I've never heard of any problems with partying (in the news), or problems with crime. The campus is located adjacent to a cute downtown (Mount Vernon), high on a hill. Presidential candidates usually stop by the Lincoln Cafe in Mount Vernon during their campaigning in Iowa. Some of the homes near the campus may be a little run down, mixed in with nice homes, and some historical. The surrounding countryside is very pretty, with a lot of new homes being built further from the town core.

I would have had no hesitations if my kids had chosen to go there.

My brother graduated from Cornell many years ago. It was a good fit for him because of the one class at a time set up. Mount Vernon is a very cute town, nice downtown area, pretty scenic overall. It's pretty close to Cedar Rapids and not much farther from Iowa City for shopping and more "night life" type things.

Well, I have multiple connections with the college (including having taught there), so I'm not exactly unbiased , but I think it's a wonderful school and a great community. Here is a link to a post about Mount Vernon that I wrote several years ago. One of my favorite things about the college and town continues to be the good relationship between the two--the community is supportive of college events, many students volunteer in the community, and the two mingle in the shared library and at other shared activities.

Of course the one class at a time schedule is the most distinctive feature of the college; I'm sure you've already heard a lot about the system. If you wanted to share a little more about what your son is looking for, or questions he or you might have, I can answer more specifically. Feel free to contact me through Direct Messages if you'd rather communicate less publicly.

Good luck and have fun with the college search!

Thanks everyone. You've all been very helpful.

My son would be a transfer student and he is annoyed by the "one class every term that I can't and don't want to devote all of my attention to, and the one course to which I want to devote all of my attention - and then some!"

This does look like it may work for him. Mt. Vernon looks interesting to me, also. I'm excited about this one.

How is it going? My sister is a Cornell alum (Class of 2005) and loved it. Their one-course-at-a-time system really worked well for her.
