TRANSLATION (PART)

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
9. At-Taubah

009.001
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: A (declaration) of immunity from Allah and His Messenger, to those of the Pagans with whom ye have contracted mutual alliances:-
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Freedom from obligation (is proclaimed) from Allah and His messenger toward those of the idolaters with whom ye made a treaty.
M.H.SHAKIR: (This is a declaration of) immunity by Allah and His Messenger towards those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement.

009.002
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Go ye, then, for four months, backwards and forwards, (as ye will), throughout the land, but know ye that ye cannot frustrate Allah (by your falsehood) but that Allah will cover with shame those who reject Him.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Travel freely in the land four months, and know that ye cannot escape Allah and that Allah will confound the disbelievers (in His Guidance).
M.H.SHAKIR: So go about in the land for four months and know that you cannot weaken Allah and that Allah will bring disgrace to the unbelievers.

009.003
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger, to the people (assembled) on the day of the Great Pilgrimage,- that Allah and His Messenger dissolve (treaty) obligations with the Pagans. If then, ye repent, it were best for you; but if ye turn away, know ye that ye cannot frustrate Allah. And proclaim a grievous penalty to those who reject Faith.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And a proclamation from Allah and His messenger to all men on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and (so is) His messenger. So, if ye repent, it will be better for you; but if ye are averse, then know that ye cannot escape Allah. Give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom to those who disbelieve,
M.H.SHAKIR: And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah and His Messenger are free from liability to the idolaters; therefore if you repent, it will be better for you, and if you turn back, then know that you will not weaken Allah; and announce painful punishment to those who disbelieve.

009.004
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: (But the treaties are) not dissolved with those Pagans with whom ye have entered into alliance and who have not subsequently failed you in aught, nor aided any one against you. So fulfil your engagements with them to the end of their term: for Allah loveth the righteous.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him).
M.H.SHAKIR: Except those of the idolaters with whom you made an agreement, then they have not failed you in anything and have not backed up any one against you, so fulfill their agreement to the end of their term; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).

009.005
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
M.H.SHAKIR: So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

009.006
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And if anyone of the idolaters seeketh thy protection (O Muhammad), then protect him so that he may hear the Word of Allah, and afterward convey him to his place of safety. That is because they are a folk who know not.
M.H.SHAKIR: And if one of the idolaters seek protection from you, grant him protection till he hears the word of Allah, then make him attain his place of safety; this is because they are a people who do not know.

009.007
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: How can there be a league, before Allah and His Messenger, with the Pagans, except those with whom ye made a treaty near the sacred Mosque? As long as these stand true to you, stand ye true to them: for Allah doth love the righteous.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: How can there be a treaty with Allah and with His messenger for the idolaters save those with whom ye made a treaty at the Inviolable Place of Worship? So long as they are true to you, be true to them. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty.
M.H.SHAKIR: How can there be an agreement for the idolaters with Allah and with His Messenger; except those with whom you made an agreement at the Sacred Mosque? So as long as they are true to you, be true to them; surely Allah loves those who are careful (of their duty).

009.008
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: How (can there be such a league), seeing that if they get an advantage over you, they respect not in you the ties either of kinship or of covenant? With (fair words from) their mouths they entice you, but their hearts are averse from you; and most of them are rebellious and wicked.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: How (can there be any treaty for the others) when, if they have the upper hand of you, they regard not pact nor honour in respect of you? They satisfy you with their mouths the while their hearts refuse. And most of them are wrongdoers.
M.H.SHAKIR: How (can it be)! while if they prevail against you, they would not pay regard in your case to ties of relationship, nor those of covenant; they please you with their mouths while their hearts do not consent; and most of them are transgressors.

009.009
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: The Signs of Allah have they sold for a miserable price, and (many) have they hindered from His way: evil indeed are the deeds they have done.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: They have purchased with the revelations of Allah a little gain, so they debar (men) from His way. Lo! evil is that which they are wont to do.
M.H.SHAKIR: They have taken a small price for the communications of Allah, so they turn away from His way; surely evil is it that they do.

009.010
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: In a Believer they respect not the ties either of kinship or of covenant! It is they who have transgressed all bounds.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And they observe toward a believer neither pact nor honour. These are they who are transgressors.
M.H.SHAKIR: They do not pay regard to ties of relationship nor those of covenant in the case of a believer; and these are they who go beyond the limits.

8. Al-Anfal

008.001
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: They ask thee concerning (things taken as) spoils of war. Say: “(such) spoils are at the disposal of Allah and the Messenger: So fear Allah, and keep straight the relations between yourselves: Obey Allah and His Messenger, if ye do believe.”
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: They ask thee (O Muhammad) of the spoils of war. Say: The spoils of war belong to Allah and the messenger, so keep your duty to Allah, and adjust the matter of your difference, and obey Allah and His messenger, if ye are (true) believers.
M.H.SHAKIR: They ask you about the windfalls. Say: The windfalls are for Allah and the Messenger. So be careful of (your duty to) Allah and set aright matters of your difference, and obey Allah and His Messenger if you are believers.

008.002
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: For, Believers are those who, when Allah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts, and when they hear His signs rehearsed, find their faith strengthened, and put (all) their trust in their Lord;
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: They only are the (true) believers whose hearts feel fear when Allah is mentioned, and when His revelations are recited unto them they increase their faith, and who trust in their Lord;
M.H.SHAKIR: Those only are believers whose hearts become full of fear when Allah is mentioned, and when His communications are recited to them they increase them in faith, and in their Lord do they trust.

008.003
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Who establish regular prayers and spend (freely) out of the gifts We have given them for sustenance:
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Who establish worship and spend of that We have bestowed on them.
M.H.SHAKIR: Those who keep up prayer and spend (benevolently) out of what We have given them.

008.004
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Such in truth are the believers: they have grades of dignity with their Lord, and forgiveness, and generous sustenance:
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Those are they who are in truth believers. For them are grades (of honour) with their Lord, and pardon, and a bountiful provision.
M.H.SHAKIR: These are the believers in truth; they shall have from their Lord exalted grades and forgiveness and an honorable sustenance.

008.005
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Just as thy Lord ordered thee out of thy house in truth, even though a party among the Believers disliked it,
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Even as thy Lord caused thee (Muhammad) to go forth from thy home with the Truth, and lo! a party of the believers were averse (to it).
M.H.SHAKIR: Even as your Lord caused you to go forth from your house with the truth, though a party of the believers were surely averse;

008.006
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Disputing with thee concerning the truth after it was made manifest, as if they were being driven to death and they (actually) saw it.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Disputing with thee of the Truth after it had been made manifest, as if they were being driven to death visible.
M.H.SHAKIR: They disputed with you about the truth after it had become clear, (and they went forth) as if they were being driven to death while they saw (it).

008.007
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Behold! Allah promised you one of the two (enemy) parties, that it should be yours: Ye wished that the one unarmed should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the Truth according to His words and to cut off the roots of the Unbelievers;-
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And when Allah promised you one of the two bands (of the enemy) that it should be yours, and ye longed that other than the armed one might be yours. And Allah willed that He should cause the Truth to triumph by His words, and cut the root of the disbelievers;
M.H.SHAKIR: And when Allah promised you one of the two parties that it shall be yours and you loved that the one not armed should he yours and Allah desired to manifest the truth of what was true by His words and to cut off the root of the unbelievers.

008.008
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: That He might justify Truth and prove Falsehood false, distasteful though it be to those in guilt.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: That He might cause the Truth to triumph and bring vanity to naught, however much the guilty might oppose;
M.H.SHAKIR: That He may manifest the truth of what was true and show the falsehood of what was false, though the guilty disliked.

008.009
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Remember ye implored the assistance of your Lord, and He answered you: “I will assist you with a thousand of the angels, ranks on ranks.”
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: When ye sought help of your Lord and He answered you (saying): I will help you with a thousand of the angels, rank on rank.
M.H.SHAKIR: When you sought aid from your Lord, so He answered you: I will assist you with a thousand of the angels following one another.

008.010
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Allah made it but a message of hope, and an assurance to your hearts: (in any case) there is no help except from Allah: and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Allah appointed it only as good tidings, and that your hearts thereby might be at rest. Victory cometh only by the help of Allah. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Wise.
M.H.SHAKIR: And Allah only gave it as a good news and that your hearts might be at ease thereby; and victory is only from Allah; surely Allah is Mighty, Wise.

M.H.SHAKIR: Alif Lam Mim Suad.

007.002
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: A Book revealed unto thee,- So let thy heart be oppressed no more by any difficulty on that account,- that with it thou mightest warn (the erring) and teach the Believers).
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: (It is) a Scripture that is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) – so let there be no heaviness in thy heart therefrom – that thou mayst warn thereby, and (it is) a Reminder unto believers.
M.H.SHAKIR: A Book revealed to you– so let there be no straitness in your breast on account of it– that you may warn thereby, and a reminder close to the believers.

007.003
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Follow (O men!) the revelation given unto you from your Lord, and follow not, as friends or protectors, other than Him. Little it is ye remember of admonition.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: (Saying): Follow that which is sent down unto you from your Lord, and follow no protecting friends beside Him. Little do ye recollect!
M.H.SHAKIR: Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow guardians besides Him, how little do you mind.

007.004
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: How many towns have We destroyed (for their sins)? Our punishment took them on a sudden by night or while they slept for their afternoon rest.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: How many a township have We destroyed! As a raid by night, or while they slept at noon, Our terror came unto them.
M.H.SHAKIR: And how many a town that We destroyed, so Our punishment came to it by night or while they slept at midday.

007.005
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: When (thus) Our punishment took them, no cry did they utter but this: “Indeed we did wrong.”
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: No plea had they, when Our terror came unto them, save that they said: Lo! We were wrong-doers.
M.H.SHAKIR: Yet their cry, when Our punishment came to them, was nothing but that they said: Surely we were unjust.

007.006
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Then shall we question those to whom Our message was sent and those by whom We sent it.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Then verily We shall question those unto whom (Our message) hath been sent, and verily We shall question the messengers.
M.H.SHAKIR: Most certainly then We will question those to whom (the messengers) were sent, and most certainly We will also question the messengers;

007.007
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: And verily, We shall recount their whole story with knowledge, for We were never absent (at any time or place).
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Then verily We shall narrate unto them (the event) with knowledge, for We were not absent (when it came to pass).
M.H.SHAKIR: Then most certainly We will relate to them with knowledge, and We were not absent.

007.008
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: The balance that day will be true (to nicety): those whose scale (of good) will be heavy, will prosper:
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: The weighing on that day is the true (weighing). As for those whose scale is heavy, they are the successful.
M.H.SHAKIR: And the measuring out on that day will be just; then as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is heavy, those are they who shall be successful;

007.009
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Those whose scale will be light, will be their souls in perdition, for that they wrongfully treated Our signs.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And as for those whose scale is light: those are they who lose their souls because they used to wrong Our revelations.
M.H.SHAKIR: And as for him whose measure (of good deeds) is light those are they who have made their souls suffer loss because they disbelieved in Our communications.

007.010
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: It is We Who have placed you with authority on earth, and provided you therein with means for the fulfilment of your life: small are the thanks that ye give!
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And We have given you (mankind) power in the earth, and appointed for you therein livelihoods. Little give ye thanks!
M.H.SHAKIR: And certainly We have established you in the earth and made in it means of livelihood for you; little it is that you give thanks.

006.001
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Praise be Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth, and made the darkness and the light. Yet those who reject Faith hold (others) as equal, with their Guardian-Lord.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Praise be to Allah, Who hath created the heavens and the earth, and hath appointed darkness and light. Yet those who disbelieve ascribe rivals unto their Lord.
M.H.SHAKIR: All praise is due to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light; yet those who disbelieve set up equals with their Lord.

006.002
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: He it is created you from clay, and then decreed a stated term (for you). And there is in His presence another determined term; yet ye doubt within yourselves!
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: He it is Who hath created you from clay, and hath decreed a term for you. A term is fixed with Him. Yet still ye doubt!
M.H.SHAKIR: He it is Who created you from clay, then He decreed a term; and there is a term named with Him; still you doubt.

006.003
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: And He is Allah in the heavens and on earth. He knoweth what ye hide, and what ye reveal, and He knoweth the (recompense) which ye earn (by your deeds).
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: He is Allah in the heavens and in the earth. He knoweth both your secret and your utterance, and He knoweth what ye earn.
M.H.SHAKIR: And He is Allah in the heavens and in the earth; He knows your secret (thoughts) and your open (words), and He knows what you earn.

006.004
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: But never did a single one of the signs of their Lord reach them, but they turned away therefrom.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Never came there unto them a revelation of the revelations of Allah but they did turn away from it.
M.H.SHAKIR: And there does not come to them any communication of the communications of their Lord but they turn aside from it

006.005
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: And now they reject the truth when it reaches them: but soon shall they learn the reality of what they used to mock at.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And they denied the truth when it came unto them. But there will come unto them the tidings of that which they used to deride.
M.H.SHAKIR: So they have indeed rejected the truth when it came to them; therefore the truth of what they mocked at will shine upon them.

ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: See they not how many of those before them We did destroy?- generations We had established on the earth, in strength such as We have not given to you – for whom We poured out rain from the skies in abundance, and gave (fertile) streams flowing beneath their (feet): yet for their sins We destroyed them, and raised in their wake fresh generations (to succeed them).
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: See they not how many a generation We destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth more firmly than We have established you, and We shed on them abundant showers from the sky, and made the rivers flow beneath them. Yet we destroyed them for their sins, and created after them another generation.
M.H.SHAKIR: Do they not consider how many a generation We have destroyed before them, whom We had established in the earth as We have not established you, and We sent the clouds pouring rain on them in abundance, and We made the rivers to flow beneath them, then We destroyed them on account of their faults and raised up after them another generation.

006.007
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: If We had sent unto thee a written (message) on parchment, so that they could touch it with their hands, the Unbelievers would have been sure to say: “This is nothing but obvious magic!”
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Had we sent down unto thee (Muhammad) (actual) writing upon parchment, so that they could feel it with their hands, those who disbelieve would have said: This is naught else than mere magic.
M.H.SHAKIR: And if We had sent to you a writing on a paper, then they had touched it with their hands, certainly those who disbelieve would have said: This is nothing but clear enchantment.

006.008
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: They say: “Why is not an angel sent down to him?” If we did send down an angel, the matter would be settled at once, and no respite would be granted them.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: They say: Why hath not an angel been sent down unto him? If We sent down an angel, then the matter would be judged; no further time would be allowed them (for reflection).
M.H.SHAKIR: And they say: Why has not an angel been sent down to him? And had We sent down an angel, the matter would have certainly been decided and then they would not have been respited.

006.009
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: If We had made it an angel, We should have sent him as a man, and We should certainly have caused them confusion in a matter which they have already covered with confusion.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Had we appointed him (Our messenger) an angel, We assuredly had made him (as) a man (that he might speak to men); and (thus) obscured for them (the truth) they (now) obscure.
M.H.SHAKIR: And if We had made him angel, We would certainly have made him a man, and We would certainly have made confused to them what they make confused.

006.010
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Mocked were (many) messengers before thee; but their scoffers were hemmed in by the thing that they mocked.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Messengers (of Allah) have been derided before thee, but that whereat they scoffed surrounded such of them as did deride.
M.H.SHAKIR: And certainly messengers before you were mocked at, but that which they mocked at encompassed the scoffers among them.

TRANSLATION (PART)

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
5. Al-Maidah

005.001
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: O ye who believe! fulfil (all) obligations. Lawful unto you (for food) are all four-footed animals, with the exceptions named: But animals of the chase are forbidden while ye are in the sacred precincts or in pilgrim garb: for Allah doth command according to His will and plan.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALLL: O ye who believe! Fulfil your indentures. The beast of cattle is made lawful unto you (for food) except that which is announced unto you (herein), game being unlawful when ye are on the pilgrimage. Lo! Allah ordaineth that which pleaseth Him.
M.H.SHAKIR: O you who believe! fulfill the obligations. The cattle quadrupeds are allowed to you except that which is recited to you, not violating the prohibition against game when you are entering upon the performance of the pilgrimage; surely Allah orders what He desires.

005.002
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: O ye who believe! Violate not the sanctity of the symbols of Allah, nor of the sacred month, nor of the animals brought for sacrifice, nor the garlands that mark out such animals, nor the people resorting to the sacred house, seeking of the bounty and good pleasure of their Lord. But when ye are clear of the sacred precincts and of pilgrim garb, ye may hunt and let not the hatred of some people in (once) shutting you out of the Sacred Mosque lead you to transgression (and hostility on your part). Help ye one another in righteousness and piety, but help ye not one another in sin and rancour: fear Allah: for Allah is strict in punishment.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: O ye who believe! Profane not Allah’s monuments nor the Sacred Month nor the offerings nor the garlands, nor those repairing to the Sacred House, seeking the grace and pleasure of their Lord. But when ye have left the sacred territory, then go hunting (if ye will). And let not your hatred of a folk who (once) stopped your going to the inviolable place of worship seduce you to transgress; but help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. Help not one another unto sin and transgression, but keep your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is severe in punishment.
M.H.SHAKIR: O you who believe! do not violate the signs appointed by Allah nor the sacred month, nor (interfere with) the offerings, nor the sacrificial animals with garlands, nor those going to the sacred house seeking the grace and pleasure of their Lord; and when you are free from the obligations of the pilgrimage, then hunt, and let not hatred of a people– because they hindered you from the Sacred Masjid– incite you to exceed the limits, and help one another in goodness and piety, and do not help one another in sin and aggression; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is severe in requiting (evil).

005.003
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah; that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Forbidden unto you (for food) are carrion and blood and swineflesh, and that which hath been dedicated unto any other than Allah, and the strangled, and the dead through beating, and the dead through falling from a height, and that which hath been killed by (the goring of) horns, and the devoured of wild beasts, saving that which ye make lawful (by the death-stroke), and that which hath been immolated unto idols. And (forbidden is it) that ye swear by the divining arrows. This is an abomination. This day are those who disbelieve in despair of (ever harming) your religion; so fear them not, fear Me! This day have I perfected your religion for you and completed My favour unto you, and have chosen for you as religion al-Islam. Whoso is forced by hunger, not by will, to sin: (for him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
M.H.SHAKIR: Forbidden to you is that which dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that on which any other name than that of Allah has been invoked, and the strangled (animal) and that beaten to death, and that killed by a fall and that killed by being smitten with the horn, and that which wild beasts have eaten, except what you slaughter, and what is sacrificed on stones set up (for idols) and that you divide by the arrows; that is a transgression. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of your religion, so fear them not, and fear Me. This day have I perfected for you your religion and completed My favor on you and chosen for you Islam as a religion; but whoever is compelled by hunger, not inclining willfully to sin, then surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

005.004
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: They ask thee what is lawful to them (as food). Say: lawful unto you are (all) things good and pure: and what ye have taught your trained hunting animals (to catch) in the manner directed to you by Allah: eat what they catch for you, but pronounce the name of Allah over it: and fear Allah; for Allah is swift in taking account.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: They ask thee (O Muhammad) what is made lawful for them. Say: (all) good things are made lawful for you. And those beasts and birds of prey which ye have trained as hounds are trained, ye teach them that which Allah taught you; so eat of that which they catch for you and mention Allah’s name upon it, and observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is swift to take account.
M.H.SHAKIR: They ask you as to what is allowed to them. Say: The good things are allowed to you, and what you have taught the beasts and birds of prey, training them to hunt– you teach them of what Allah has taught you– so eat of that which they catch for you and mention the name of Allah over it; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is swift in reckoning.

005.005
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. (Lawful unto you in marriage) are (not only) chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time,- when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues if any one rejects faith, fruitless is his work, and in the Hereafter he will be in the ranks of those who have lost (all spiritual good).
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: This day are (all) good things made lawful for you. The food of those who have received the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And so are the virtuous women of the believers and the virtuous women of those who received the Scripture before you (lawful for you) when ye give them their marriage portions and live with them in honour, not in fornication, nor taking them as secret concubines. Whoso denieth the faith, his work is vain and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.
M.H.SHAKIR: This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.

005.006
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: O ye who believe! when ye prepare for prayer, wash your faces, and your hands (and arms) to the elbows; Rub your heads (with water); and (wash) your feet to the ankles. If ye are in a state of ceremonial impurity, bathe your whole body. But if ye are ill, or on a journey, or one of you cometh from offices of nature, or ye have been in contact with women, and ye find no water, then take for yourselves clean sand or earth, and rub therewith your faces and hands, Allah doth not wish to place you in a difficulty, but to make you clean, and to complete his favour to you, that ye may be grateful.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: O ye who believe! When ye rise up for prayer, wash you faces, and your hands up to the elbows, and lightly rub your heads and (wash) your feet up to the ankles. And if ye are unclean, purify yourselves. And if ye are sick or on a journey, or one of you cometh from the closet, or ye have had contact with women, and ye find not water, then go to clean, high ground and rub your faces and your hands with some of it. Allah would not place a burden on you, but He would purify you and would perfect His grace upon you, that ye may give thanks.
M.H.SHAKIR: O you who believe! when you rise up to prayer, wash your faces and your hands as far as the elbows, and wipe your heads and your feet to the ankles; and if you are under an obligation to perform a total ablution, then wash (yourselves) and if you are sick or on a journey, or one of you come from the privy, or you have touched the women, and you cannot find water, betake yourselves to pure earth and wipe your faces and your hands therewith, Allah does not desire to put on you any difficulty, but He wishes to purify you and that He may complete His favor on you, so that you may be grateful.

005.007
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: And call in remembrance the favour of Allah unto you, and His covenant, which He ratified with you, when ye said: “We hear and we obey”: And fear Allah, for Allah knoweth well the secrets of your hearts.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Remember Allah’s grace upon you and His covenant by which He bound you when ye said: We hear and we obey; And keep your duty to Allah. Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men).
M.H.SHAKIR: And remember the favor of Allah on you and His covenant with which He bound you firmly, when you said: We have heard and we obey, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, surely Allah knows what is in the breasts.

005.008
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: O ye who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: O ye who believe! Be steadfast witnesses for Allah in equity, and let not hatred of any people seduce you that ye deal not justly. Deal justly, that is nearer to your duty. Observe your duty to Allah. Lo! Allah is Informed of what ye do.
M.H.SHAKIR: O you who believe! Be upright for Allah, bearers of witness with justice, and let not hatred of a people incite you not to act equitably; act equitably, that is nearer to piety, and he careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do.

005.009
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: To those who believe and do deeds of righteousness hath Allah promised forgiveness and a great reward.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: Allah hath promised those who believe and do good works: Theirs will be forgiveness and immense reward.
M.H.SHAKIR: Allah has promised to those who believe and do good deeds (that) they shall have forgiveness and a mighty reward.

005.010
ABDLH.YUSUF ALI: Those who reject faith and deny our signs will be companions of Hell-fire.
MUHD M.W.PICKTHALL: And they who disbelieve and deny Our revelations, such are rightful owners of hell.
M.H.SHAKIR: And (as for) those who disbelieve and reject our communications, these are the companions of the name.
