I'm not sure either. I was legitimately asking. He was claiming that the only reason Jackson has so much crime is because of its size, I showed that there are cities MUCH larger than Jackson with far less crime.

I'm curious as to why, what makes these cities do so much better than Jackson?

Z's point was that Jackson's population, in comparison to the suburban communities, would stand to reason why crime is higher. I don't think his point was to say that other cities close to and bigger than Jackson has more or less crime.

Some people are so attached to this place they would have you risk your safety instead of admit there are deadly serious problems here. People also have a very distorted sense of size here. (they dont realize how small it is) The Fondren area is a fun place. I fully admit that...but it is little more than a city block or so. In many cities it would be a busy street corner worth of stuff. There is very little buffer zone. The bad areas come right up to it.

The other side of that is there are pretty good solutions. Because this place is stagnant and fairly undesirable to outsiders, that can be good news. Compared to most other places, there is very little traffic here and even the nice areas of fairly cheap. You can live 10 miles away in a more upscale and safe area and still get to work with little traffic frustration.
I also am coming for a residency at UMMC (1 year), looking for a single family home, trying not to pay more than 1300-1400/month and preferably less if possible. Which were the upscale and safe places you were thinking? I saw Ridgeland has some single family homes, but Flowood didn't have as many. Safety is of paramount importance to me (moving with family), followed by commuting time to UMMC (would prefer 15 minutes or less if possible), followed by price. Thank you!

Getting around Jackson is fairly easy. I assume you live in the Boston area. You won't experience the kind of traffic here that most big cities have. By interstate, UMC can be reached by most places within 15-20 minutes. The bigger concentration of upscale housing will be in northeast Jackson and southern Madison County, along with some pockets of Rankin County.

You can live almost anywhere in the metro and get to UMC in 15-30 mikes. People here who think traffic is bad, haven't seen much. South Madison County and Flowood are safe and close.

1) Can't reccomend Jackson since you have a family (cost of private schools, crime, etc). I would suggest Brandon, Ridgeland, Madison. These are more family friendly.

2) This is a driving town. Public transportation is not what you are used to in the northeast. Luckily the traffic we have here pales in comparison to Boston.

3) With the amount of rent you are looking at I would reccomend the area near the Reservoir in Ridgeland. I would also suggest you looking into renting a home in Madison.

If you have any specific questions just send me a private message.

Rent is too high in Madison, look at Ridgeland. Cheap rent and safe environment! Try NE Jackson also, and if you have children in elementary school, you could look at Casey Elementary or McWillie Elementary, which is a Montessori school for grades K-6. Both of these schools are the most integrated schools in the JPS system with Casey having 13% White, & 15% White at McWillie. Or if you could afford private school go for that too! But Casey and McWillie are great elementary schools. Both are rated 10 out of 10!
