This just hit the news...We are ranked #6 in the top 15 cities with declining home prices

#6. Jacksonville, Fla.
Population: 1.3 million
Average home price: $194,200
Home price decline: 7%
12-month home price forecast: -4%
Jacksonville was one of the fastest-growing cities in the country during the past decade, but its job-growth engine has come to a virtual standstill. Information-sector jobs, in particular, are down 5% in the last year. Prices in this northern Florida beach city are down 29% from their peak in the second quarter of 2007.

How is this going to affect Jacksonville? Or you?

The economy is terrible here and the employment outlook is not favorable at all...yet people continue to make plans to abandon their lives elsewhere and move to Florida. It boggles my mind to try to understand their actions.

I completely agree. Why in Gods name would anyone leave a familiar situation and move somewhere totally unknown? Is it the grass is always greener in paradise syndrome?

In spite of all the doom and gloom there are still specialized opportunities in certain areas for people who are suitably qualified. If you are looking for a dime a dozen job, forget it. Plus, not everybody moving to this neck of the woods is looking for a job. There's a ton of retirees here with bucks that still consider this corner a little paradise.

possibly. I've traveled to the rust belt and can see why hope is lost.

FL many times doesn't attract the cream of the crop from other states.

Many times it is people who have screwed up somewhere else or even have legal issues and so they head to FL.

And end up adding to the problems here.

I know that in Ponte Vedra Beach, prices on existing homes continue to drop - 7% drop in price per sq ft since January on our street. And our street is considered by many to be one of the nicest in town.
