I have been a Comcast/Xfinity customer up north, but want to get the NFL and MLB packages when I move to JAX so I can see my home teams. Does anyone have any experience with Direct TV? Does it go out during rain storms? Is the pricing close to Comcast? Thanks!

I've had DirecTV at a townhome I used to live in, and it would go out a decent amount during storms. The dish was roof mounted, but I think it was a pretty bad install.

About a year ago we bought a house and had DirecTV installed there as well. This time we got the dish mounted on the ground and I think we have lost signal twice (for about 5 minutes each time) during REALLY bad storms where I wouldn't even want to keep the TV on.

As long as the dish is installed correctly, you really don't have much to worry about.

Pricing is roughly the same. Make sure you compare prices after the promo rates expire and also realize that you'll lose out on any sort of Double or Triple play from Comcast if you are only getting internet from them.

OK thanks, so you recommend installing on the ground? We might get Security from Comcast as well as internet so we would probably get a discount. Are there any other options fr internet besides Comcast? I heard its pretty slow in JAX and terrible customer service.

Everything you're talking about depends on where you live. I see very few dishes on the ground, everyone has them on their roof around here. Comcast does have terrible customer service, but it's not slow.

There's likely not enough room between the houses to put it on the ground, but it depends on the lot and the skill of the install technician. I'm not a fan of satellite for exactly this potential of outage, not to mention I think they are huge eyesores. I do miss watching my old local football team on Sunday, but you can get all the other NHL/MLB/NBA packages with Comcast.

Been with DTV more than decade here and in NJ. Have found rain fade is very slightly worse here -- but I do not consider it a problem, and of course there's no snow problems. I've occasionally compared my tier level with DTV to a similar package with Comcast and always found DTV to be somewhat cheaper -- and they are more open to throwing discounts at you if you complain.

Comcast internet: I get more than 50 mbps down and more than 10 up. Faster than Optonline was in NJ, although I do get more outages.

OK thanks for the info. Comcast doesn't offer the NFL games, just the RedZone, so that would be a bummer for me if I had to watch Tampa and the Jaguars all the time. (no offense to those fans).

It depends on your team, but most teams have a handful of primetime games you'll get to see and they do show best match-up games at 1 and/or 4 every weekend.

And really, if you're that hard up, there are a ton of sports bars that show every game on gigantic screens where you can share food and drink with like-minded fans.

Being a huge Redskins fan, I do miss the weekly game, but I can watch it if I hop in the car and drive 10 minutes down the street. If you haven't watched RedZone, it's actually really, really good. 7 hours of commercial free NFL is really nice. And you get to see all the important plays of every single game, it's a really nice alternative.

An independent installer recently told me that the dishes now access as many as four or five satellites at a time rather than the one that I had experience with. This makes the skipping and outages much less of a problem.
