Hi all,

My wife and I live in NEW England, and are thinking about moving to a sunny state with no income tax, and we are thinking of the St. Augustine Area. I have a small law practice that I would move (patents, trademarks and copyrights). Any thoughts on whether I could make a go of it? My wife works at a local University as a community outreach coordinator, any colleges/university in the St. Augustine area? Thanks in advance for any thoughts or advice! Oh, and we are avid tennis players, so living in FL should save us a lot of $$$ when it comes to indoor court fees (like never playing indoors again!!!).

I can't speak to the law practice, but I believe the only institutions of higher education are Flagler College and the local community college. From what I understand, Flagler is a really nice, small, private liberal arts college.

And tennis (along with golf) are extremely popular. That should be a really nice change for you, although you might have to get used to playing on har-tru clay courts.

For your wife's career you might consider Jax over St. Augustine because there are many more colleges/U's there. Several community colleges, UNF, Jacksonville U, etc.

True. Flagler is a gorgeous college, but I don't know of any other colleges in St. Aug . There's a community college in Palatka, to the west of St. Augustine, but otherwise, all the schools are in Jacksonville:

Side note to the list of schools ... FCCJ (Florida Community College at Jacksonville) is becoming a 4-year school with the transition happening as early as this summer I believe. I don't know how it will all work and whether all five campuses and seven centers will convert from the two-year to four-year.

I don't know if the other community college, SJRCC (St Johns River Community College), will follow suit. SJRCC has three campuses (Orange Park, Palatka, St Augustine).

Interesting. We are in the same position. My husband is also an IP attorney, and we are thinking about moving to the area, since these days, he only needs his cell phone and computer.

We are leaving this week to go down and check things out.

Hi all,

We had a baby at the end of 2009 which happily sidetracked us. Now we are gearing up to make the move to the JAX area, however, now we are looking towards the Ponte Vedra, Nocatee, Jacksonville Beach area. So, any other comments on moving a patent law practice to the area? Thanks!

St. Johns River community college is in St. Augustine off SR 16 and several other small private colleges. Lifestyle in St. Aug is more relaxed than Jax, but you should visit and tour the area to see what best suites your lifestyle.

St. Augustine law market is very competitive, so be prepared to work and network. It will take some time to build a client base so have some money set aside to live on as well.
