By that I mean places I can go and meet people that are interesting and sane. Not looking for places to drink or get messed up but somewhere I can relax with intelligent people who just want to have fun and maybe a conversation. Anyone have any ideas?

You haven't said what your interests are. It's easier to meet people who share the same interests as you.

Since you enjoy reading (as I do) here's a link to Jacksonville book club meeting groups.

You like music, maybe you can get involved with the 2010 Jacksonville Jazz Festival? They always need volunteers:

Jacksonville Jazz Festival May 21-24, 2009

There are plenty of events that need help behind the scenes.

Three Layers Coffee House on the corner of Walnut & 6th in Springfield sounds like you kinds place.

It's a relatively new (about a year old) nice, trendy coffee house. Not very big, but has a lot of interesting stuff going on. Almost every evening they have live music (keyboard, vocalist, banjo, etc), they have a mix of health foods, coffess, pastries, soups, and sanwhiches, books, games, tv, comfy couches and chair, and high marble topped tables. of course a bar top too. outside seating is nice and it's a dog friendly place (place to tie up your dog with water just outside the door).

It's become so popular that there have been 2 newpaper articles and 1 evening news segment on about it. All kinds of people stop by Three Layers, a wide variety.

BTW, they just opened a small wine bar (connected) as well, complete with an enclosed outdoor space. It's open in the evenings too.
