I will graduate this Dec. just got an job offer in Jax. Since this job seems to be a perfect match for my career development, I am thinking of taking this offer. Meanwhile I was wondering how life would be in Jax.

My wife (27) and I (29) are Chinese. Is there any racial issues in Jax? We have been living in a university town for 5 years in mid-west: seemly we have been used to 'boring life' there. Yet we usually travel 3 or 4 times per year to big cities (e.g. LA SF NY Botson, etc.), enjoying night life, concert, and shopping there. In routine days, all what I need is a tennis partner, jogging trail, poker room, and few nice clubs for my ages. maybe we can develope some new hobbies in Jax too.

We would like to stay as far as we can to the north and west. If my wife can find an accountant job here, our household income may hit the range from 110k to 120k / year. If we plan to start a life here, when and where should we look for houses? we r planning to have a kid or two after I finished a marathon: hopefully it will be within next two years. Is there any community particularly good for raising kids?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've noticed a respectable amount of Asian families in Jacksonville. Just in my small, 100-home neighborhood in Mandarin, there are several Asian households. I know my Filipino neighbors across the street have BBQ's all the time. I'm good friends with the owners of a local Chinese restaurant, who live 1 street over from us. I believe the Asian population is well represented here.

I think Mandarin would be a good place to start, if you want to be in Duval County. Otherwise, you could look in St. Johns County, which is just a few minutes further, travel-wise.

Julinglington Creek have everything you wanted except night clubs. Night clubs here I don't believe fits the Asian scene. That community is far South as you can get from Jacksonville, even though it's in St. John's county. Search the threads here and you'll find mostly positive things about the place. Racial issue here is limited, JAX still have the Southern charm and friendliness. Asian mom and pop grocery stores are aplenty, just about everything plaza has one Chinese take out place. But only a handful of good Chinese restaurants (there's a thread for that too). You won't find any specific Asian community here like you would in LA, SF, NY, and Boston. Next major Asian populated city is Orlando (2 hours away) and Atlanta (6 hours away). Good luck

Hey, I'm Chinese and grew up in Jax (just a few years younger than you guys)...I think you'll be perfectly happy there. When I was a kid the Chinese community was large enough, and I think it's remained about the same ever since. It's not huge, but there are a lot of Chinese families and you should be able to easily find others to socialize with. The People's Republic and Taiwanese associations split a long time ago, but there's not much animosity now.

As for the city itself, you sound rather laid back so I don't think you'd find the area lacking in what you want. It's big enough to offer most amenities. And if your household income reaches your estimate, you should be able to live well in any part of the city.

Jax has a lot of Fillipinos, but not a huge population of any other Asian group. That being said, I'm unaware of the slightest racial tension between Asians and other ethnic groups.

May I ask why? This is by far the least developed quadrant of Jax. Unless you want a rural lifestyle (with absolutely no other Asians, I might add) the far Northwest is an odd choice.
