Hey there,

going to have an interview for a summer internship in banking next week. I only have a black suit and I really can't afford a new one as I am just a student. How bad is a black suit?

As for shirts, I have a cream one and a burgundy one. I also have a solid burgundy tie with very slight diagonal lines and a striped tie with diagonal stripes in black, cream and brown.

Cream shirt and burgundy tie normally go along quite good, but can I wear those for an interview?

What should I go and buy? Light blue shirt and dark blue tie possibly?

Thanks!

Black suit is fine. You should buy 2 solid white shirts, 1 solid navy blue shirt. Ties, you can play with but nothing too out there. SOmething that matches both the suit and shirt.

Go to the Men's Warehouse. Not sure if you;re located near one but you can shop online too.

Navy blue shirt?? Don't you mean more like a french blue shirt or lighter blue?

I have never seen ANYONE in a conservative business environment wear a dark navy blue solid shirt.

Thanks for the advice. I am in Central London and was thinking about Debenhams?

Are you sure a black suit is ok?

Shirts - would you be able to find a suitable one here? Mens Formal Shirts at Debenhams.com

I'll obviously still go there and try it on.

Find a good charity shop; ideally one that is doted on by people from the best neighborhoods.
Take a menswear informed friend with you to look over what is available.

If money is truly an issue, then wear your black suit. Otherwise, there should be lots of sales out there now (unless London's economy is better than any other place) and look for navy or dark grey. Thrift/charity shops in upscale areas probably have designer wear and someone who can help you put your outfit together. I know that banking is a conservative industry, but I would go with the burgundy shirt if you cannot afford another color.
Black and cream are too funereal for me. Do you have any friends who you could borrow a suit from? I'm thinking that you are young, so as long as your clothing is clean and pressed, let your personality guide you. Obviously, don't wear jeans and basic college wear. Good luck.

As I said, I could get some money together for a new shirt and tie, but obviously not for a suit. Also, my suit was tailored to me, so it really fits very well. I've seen a few bankers holding presentations at our uni in black, so it can't be THAT bad?

Good luck on your interview.

When I applied for a Bank position (received and accepted offer worked there for 2.5 yrs) I wore a black suit, black tie and white shirt. As long as you are clean, well kept and professional the suit color and shirt color will not matter. Just make sure you have a mature tie.

You sure they didn't mistake you for the limo driver or funeral director?

I think the black suit is fine, but I would wear a colored shirt and tie.

Bankers love light blue shirt and a dark blue tie. But cream and burgundy sound fine to me. Black suits are good enough.

Just comb your hair well, gelled and well pressed. Squeaky clean shave.

Actually, your interview answers matter more. But I think your wardrobe is good enough. The blue shirt is the best but work with what you have. No need for unnecessary spending.
